As the year draws to an end, we would like to share our thoughts on the latest trends in the UK plastic enclosure manufacturing market.

But first it is worth noting that more broadly speaking the plastic market continues to evolve at pace with new materials and applications continually being developed. The use of plastic in industries such as packaging, automotive, biotech, building and sports continues to grow as the market develops stronger, more sustainable, less expensive alternatives to existing materials.

This continuing conversion to plastic materials means that the total demand for plastics products is on track to expand by 3.5 percent in 2018 (Plastic News). The main trends driving this growth in terms of plastic enclosures include:

The Internet of Things (IoT) and smart factories are driving an increase is plastic usage as wireless devices become the norm for numerous applications. Check out our latest blog post... Over the Summer we were delighted to design and develop this heating controller prototype for the thermal energy domestic market in the UK for an existing customer. Once the custom plastic PCB unit prototype was signed off, we then went on to manufacture a production run of 50 units.


Custom Plastic PCB Unit

This rack mounted custom plastic unit houses a PCB with 4 LED indicators that use light pipes of acrylic bonded into the unit that feed the light from the PCB to the front panel illuminating the plastic. The traffic light (red, green, orange) colours show through the plastic as required. This illumination method leaves a smooth, solid plastic surface which looks stylish and cutting edge.

We are delighted to have recently designed and manufactured this waterproof plastic pendant enclosure for our sister company MDH Wireless, the UK’s market leading, leisure panic alarms systems supplier. Known for innovative designs and excellent customer service their alarm products are widely used in leisure facilities across the UK (including at hotels and spas, local authority leisure centres, schools and universities and private gyms).


Waterproof plastic pendant enclosure

The stylish pendant has 2 parts milled from solid plastic and has a blue branded gasket making it waterproof to protect the sensitive electronics. Its lightweight, waterproof design makes it perfect for use by lifeguards in swimming pools and other staff members who may need to raise an alarm from any point within the building. Also used in corporate unmanned gyms.

This pendant uses 6mm gloss, white ABS waterproof custom casing which has been carefully milled to a point that ensures a degree of flexibility which allows an internal button to depress. Thus, no external button is needed and crucially no weak points exist for water ingress.

It is screen printed with pantone matched branding and a lanyard attachment.

This stylish panic alarm pendant is part of the MDH modular wireless alarm system designed specifically for leisure centres. As the system is easy to install and cost effective it is a popular choice across the UK.

When is Custom PCB Assembly in the UK right for you?

As one of the UK’s leading custom assembly specialists we believe that if the following elements are important to you then using a UK based full turnkey solution provider rather than going abroad is the way to go. Main elements that may affect your decision include:

You want more control of your electronic project
Using a UK based custom circuit board assembly company means you have much more control over all elements of the project. As the assembly service (and often box development) is done in-house, under one roof and importantly in the same time zone as you there is much less opportunity for delays and mis-communications.

Lower volume assembly

We were delighted to develop this large, lightweight prototype welding machine cover for an existing client recently. The robust plastic cover prototype is fitted on a 700mm high portable welding machine which has 4 wheels and is mainly used in the aerospace and automotive markets in the UK and Europe.


Lightweight, Stylish Plastic Cover Prototype

The plastic prototype now weighs 35kgs (it was 65kgs) and importantly complies to Health and Safety lifting regulations in Europe. As part of the redesign we developed a complex set of 20 bespoke plastic panel covers that were bonded together to create 4 large panel parts that are fitted onto a steel frame. This was then reinforced with metal brackets for extra strength.


Internal Waterproof Boxes…

Within the water powered welding machine is a single water tight plastic box that houses the complex water/gas hydrogen system. This comprises of a dual chamber enclosure that has flanges on the outside so it can be bolted to the framework and a series of tapped holes so the gas and water fittings can be screwed into the unit. Having developed various electric vehicle (EV) charging enclosures over the years, we were the obvious choice to design and manufacture these robust weatherproof plastic enclosures for this new Midlands customer. Working with the customer we helped to make these weatherproof plastic enclosures not only durable, but stylish as well.

Planning makes the perfect Pi case

At the outset carefully plan out your case. Why not go old school and get a pencil and draw your case! Make sure you get an outline of it on all sides. This gives an idea of the components that need to be accommodated and connectors that will need openings.

This outline will provide a useful start to specifying your case. Then note things like the location of the Pi’s SoC, (overheating with prolonged use can occur so an opening for hot air to release is suggested) and spacing around cables and SD card to reach their destination, (for instance, the HDMI connector will need enough space around the port for the rubber moulding on mating cable).
