Thanks to Dolores Brandon for being our guest at our July meeting!
Last night (July 20th) I was guest presenter at NAMI* Nassau’s monthly meeting hosted by the very gracious Janet Susin, (chapter president), at the Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, NY.
It was, as always, a privilege and pleasure for me to share THE ROOT IS BITTER, THE ROOT IS SWEET In the Shadow of Madness A Memoir in person with an audience of people hungry for a voice of compassion and understanding. The reception could not have been warmer. I was particularly gratified to learn that many social workers are aware of the book and recommending it to their colleagues and patients. Many who attended last night were encouraged to come by professionals in the mental health community.
Of special value to several in the audience last night were those who appreciated my focus on the child’s point of view. My entire childhood was pretty much defined by my Dad’s manic-depressive cycles. Also appreciated was my openness on the issue of domestic violence, which I strongly believe must be treated and considered as a mental illness.
My heart goes out to all who grapple with the ravages of these neurologic disorders in their families. To hear that my story resonates with their experience, accurately depicts their own struggles and gives them a sense of hope, possibility and strength is the gift they give me in return for my opportunity to be a voice on their behalf.
NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness) has chapters throughout the nation. The support they provide is beyond measure and most worthy of general support. I am convinced the greater health of our society is directly connected to the care and understanding we provide to the mentally ill and their families.
