Martin Luther King - I have a dream

In honour of Martin Luther King – my favourite is his famous speech “I have a dream….” My son wrote a speech in grade 8 based on this theme. But instead of racial injustices, he replaced it with bullying. He was bullied all through school and my heart ached for him because I too had been bullied. I was never so proud of him that he not only took on such a difficult and personal topic but that he courageously stood before his class of bullies and delivered his speech. I hope he remembers this courage, and more importantly the meaning and purpose behind his speech.

12 Divorce Survival Tips for the Holidays

Tip # 11 – Help others in need.

Nothing makes us feel better about ourselves than giving a helping hand to a person in need. Separation and divorce often make us feel unworthy, rejected and unloved. So do something for another person or charity as part of your holiday giving and lift not only their spirits but your own.

Tip # 10 – Don’t be alone for the entire holidays.

Nothing makes you bluer than locking yourself away at home by yourself. Balance your need to find “private time” for peace, solitude and reflection with spending time with friends and family.

Tip # 9 – Create New Memories.

Who said you can’t create new traditions? Or as a parent try things you never had before. Dads get your aprons ready! You may find wonderful new memories are created that will be fondly remembered – even if those cookies may be misshapen and a little crisp around the edges.

12 Divorce Survival Tips for the Holidays

Tip # 8 – Honour Old Traditions.

Just because you are #separated or #divorced does not mean all past traditions should be abandoned. Particularly with children, Christmas would not be Christmas without some of those traditions. So choose the ones that mean the most to you, your family and children and continue to celebrate them.

Tip # 7 – Learn to say no. Politely.

The holidays usually come with increased social activities both at work and home. Without a mate or date you may feel out of place or emotionally stressed to answer those awkward questions. So just say no for both your sake and your hosts. Choose only those events that you feel you can genuinely manage. Your hosts will understand.

Tip # 6 – Don’t overdo Christmas.

Some people feel they need to prove they can manage on their own, and even better or do more than before their separation and divorce. But over the top creates added stress on time, emotions and finances. You don’t need a Griswold Christmas. One string of lights may be enough this year.

Tip # 5 – Set a budget.

Don’t over indulge your children with Christmas gifts. Parents often out of guilt over mom and dad’s #separation compensate with material gifts. Parents may also use gifts to influence children to stay or spend more time with them versus the other parent. This is a form of parental alienation. If possible, parents should discuss and set a reasonable budget each would spend for gifts for the kids that reflects the needs of the children and the income levels of both households.
