A GIFT FOR THOMAS JEFFERSON

The Old Mountain Goat know about "this" - RESIST the TEMPTATION!

"Whether Jefferson did not want to offend the French or could not resist the temptation of a chance to pay off debts, we cannot know. But his simultaneous disdain for European gifts and his inability to resist them foreshadow a long American practice: our desire to reject and accept the old practices simultaneously; our inability, at a deep level, to wrestle with how to allow wealthy presents and politics to coexist. The fate of the 'dismembered' portrait of France is unknown."

"INCREMENTAL STEPS"

The Old Mountain Goat agrees - "INCREMENTAL STEPS" will usually "WORK BETTER" for everyone!

"...Clinton believes in change through incremental steps: toughening financial regulation, building on Obamacare, expanding access to scholarships and grants without making college free for everyone. One-step-at-a-time reform is the best way to reach a larger goal, she believes. And proposals that are too big are doomed to fail — politically for sure, and probably substantively as well..."
Democrats are torn between the Sanders’s big-change vision and the more incremental Clinton perspective.

THE WHITE HOUSE

Today, President Obama spoke at the Islamic Society of Baltimore -- his first visit to a mosque in America -- on protecting our nation's tradition of religious freedom.
Watch the full remarks now:

Here are some highlights:
"If we’re serious about freedom of religion -- and I’m speaking now to my fellow Christians who remain the majority in this country -- we have to understand an attack on one faith is an attack on all our faiths. And when any religious group is targeted, we all have a responsibility to speak up. And we have to reject a politics that seeks to manipulate prejudice or bias, and targets people because of religion."

"We can’t be bystanders to bigotry. And together, we’ve got to show that America truly protects all faiths."

"I want to speak directly to the young people who may be listening. In our lives, we all have many identities. We are sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters. We’re classmates; Cub Scout troop members. We’re followers of our faith. We’re citizens of our country. And today, there are voices in this world, particularly over the Internet, who are constantly claiming that you have to choose between your identities -- as a Muslim, for example, or an American. Do not believe them. If you’re ever wondering whether you fit in here, let me say it as clearly as I can, as President of the United States: You fit in here -- right here. You’re right where you belong. You’re part of America, too. You’re not Muslim or American. You’re Muslim and American."

"We are one American family. We will rise and fall together. It won’t always be easy. There will be times where our worst impulses are given voice. But I believe that ultimately, our best voices will win out. And that gives me confidence and faith in the future."

PRESIDENT OBAMA ENCOURAGES "US"!

At Baltimore mosque, President Obama encourages U.S. Muslims: ‘You fit in here’

The Old Mountain Goat knows that "Religious and Non-Religious" thinking must encompass "Humanity", living on our "Earth Planet" - so "we" can continue to work through the "prickly thorns" that "tear" at "us" until "we"  finally go through the "thicket", and out to a "Better Day"!

"...Obama’s visit is likely to be compared with a landmark speech to the Islamic world early in his presidency. At Cairo University, Obama in 2009 called for a “new beginning” between the Islamic world and the United States, noting shared interests on issues such as extremism but also acknowledging mistakes made over centuries by all societies in the name of culture and faith..."

INSINUATE:
Suggest or hint (something bad or reprehensible) in an indirect and unpleasant way - THE OLD MOUNTAIN GOAT DOES NOT LIKE "CRUZ"!

But “chutzpah,” of course, is not a “New York” term. It’s a Yiddish — a Jewish — one. And using “New York” as a euphemism for “Jewish” has long been an anti-Semitic dog whistle.
From anti-Semitic dog-whistles to continual deception, his purpose is not to inform but to insinuate.

JOINT STATEMENT BETWEEN TWO CHURCHES!

The Old Mountain Goat Understands "this" - It Can Be "GOOD" for Everyone!

In the joint statement, the two churches said the meeting “will mark an important stage in relations between the two churches. The Holy See and the Moscow Patriarchate hope that it will also be a sign of hope for all people of good will. They invite all Christians to pray fervently for God to bless this meeting, that it may bear good fruits.”
The Vatican says Pope Francis and the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba next week in a major step to heal the 1000-year-old schism that divided Christianity between East and West.

MOST AMERICANS SAY:

The Old Mountain Goat "AGREES" - the "MIDDLE CLASS" should be the "BIGGEST"; the "RICH" and "POOR" should be the "LEAST"!

Most Americans Say Government Doesn’t Do Enough to Help Middle Class
GOP seen as favoring the rich over middle class, poor; mixed views on which class the Democratic Party favors
As Americans begin casting the first ballots in the 2016 presidential election, neither political party is widely viewed as supportive of the middle class in this country.

IT'S HOW A YOUNG GIRL
It's how a young girl -- once mocked and called names -- can pursue her dream and proudly serve her country as a head-covering Muslim American woman in the White House.
Thanks for listening,

----------

Today, President Obama will make his first visit to a mosque in America.
For me, this is personal.
I was born and raised in Maryland, not too far from D.C. Growing up, I liked basketball and art and hanging with my family and friends, just like any other kid.
But after the heinous attacks on 9/11, being a head-covering 8th grader would no longer be the same. There were days when my identity as a Muslim American became a struggle –- I was glared at, cursed and spit at in public and in school. No child should have to endure that, but today, too many Muslim Americans are living a similar tale.
It was the tenets of my faith, the ideals of this country, the encouragement of those around me, and the determination to have my voice heard that carried me through and gave me the courage to pursue public service.
Every day, I walk through the doors of the West Wing and have the privilege of working to protect the country I call home.
Today, I will be in the audience when President Obama addresses our Muslim community at the Islamic Society of Baltimore to talk about our core values as a nation -- about the people we embrace and the bigotry we reject.
I hope you'll tune in today at 12:00 pm ET.
This is an important moment. Unfortunately, the recent political discourse is antithetical to the basic tenants of what America represents. Politicians and pundits are negatively associating millions of Americans with a small fraction of terrorists.
The Muslim Americans who teach our future generations in the classroom, who take care of us in the doctor's offices, who inspire us on and off the field, who protect us on the frontlines of war -- these are the people who have always reminded me proudly, that yes, I am Muslim and American. In this country, I don't have to choose.
Please join me in listening to a president who understands one simple truth:
If you work hard and if you play by the rules, you can make it if you try in America -- no matter who you are or how you pray.
It's how a young girl -- once mocked and called names -- can pursue her dream and proudly serve her country as a head-covering Muslim American woman in the White House.
Thanks for listening,
Rumana

WALT, RAY, AND BOB
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

"Civilian Conservation Corps workers Walt, Ray, and Bob -- Walter Matthau, Raymond Burr, and Robert Mitchum -- became three of Hollywood's biggest stars. The CCC saved a generation of young men -- it represented the New Deal's effort to put Americans back to work."

Today's selection -- from These United States: A Nation in the Making 1890 to Present by Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore and Thomas J. Sugrue. In the early 1930s, the U.S. economy contracted by a draconian twenty percent, and unemployment reached as high as twenty-five percent. In this economic carnage, the federal government began to enact programs to try and overcome the adversity with controversial programs that had mixed and limited success. But there were successes. One program was a jobs program called the Civilian Conservation Corps, an effort that yielded some surprising stories:

Introduction
"The Old Mountain Goat"

Since my Joanna has let go of her life, Charlie (my little companion dog - now, also let go of his life) and I (Papa Foote, "The Traveling Man") were still walking down the "road of life" - smelling the thoughts of the world. But now, since my stroke has started to creep into my old body, my mind is still with the "Eagle’s Flying Higher" but mostly, I just want to try to squeeze my thinking and writing into just a few words that count towards a better world - like no more anger and selfish thinking that comes from warring between human clans instead of helping each other in our World! My choices are my own - from my inner self!

"Facts"

Some "Facts" are actually truths that we are able to uncover and understand!

Some "Facts" are only truths until something changes as we become able to understand more!

Some "Facts" will never become truths because we will never be able to understand!

"So"

That is why the human mind has trouble with "factual conclusions"!
