GEORGE WASHINGTON'S SECRET SPY WAR

http://www.delanceyplace.com/?utm_source=George+Washington%27s+Secret+Spy+War+56-58&utm_campaign=9%2F26%2F16&utm_medium=email

Today's selection -- from George Washington's Secret Spy War by John A Nagy. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington spent a considerable amount of time concealing the limited number of troops and lack of supplies of the Continental Army. A particularly tricky situation developed on August 3, 1775 when he realized that due to a clerical error that he had "not more than 9 cartridges [of gunpowder] a man." An american deserter conveyed that information to the British:

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Donald Trump’s week began in the wake of explosions in New Jersey and New York. It ended in the aftermath of shootings and riots. BARACK OBAMA and JUSTIN TRUDEAU

THE "CENTER" CAN HOLD - from The Old Mountain Goat who AGREES!

"OBAMA-STYLE INCREMENTALISM ISN'T DRAMATIC, BUT IT WORKS"!

"...It’s not hard to understand the appeal of simplicity in a complex world. There is little drama in plans to expand early-childhood education — and yet they work. The persistent and energetic efforts at reform do pay off. Sensible, fact-based, market-friendly government policy makes a difference. A recent Census Bureau report, showing the biggest one-year drop in poverty in the United States in almost 50 years, highlights that these efforts are working. To the United States’ north, Canada is handling a slowdown in growth, welcoming thousands of refugees and celebrating diversity. And the two major leaders in the Western world with the highest approval ratings today are Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau. The center can hold."

AMERICA IS "RIGGED"

LIKE "NULLIFYING JURORS" - from The Old Mountain Goat who UNDERSTANDS!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/why-the-media-blitz-on-trump-isnt-working/2016/09/21/9ef6cf26-8039-11e6-8327-f141a7beb626_story.html?utm_term=.819200fd1c8c&wpisrc=nl_opinions&wpmm=1#comments

"...There is a psychological similarity, however. Trump’s campaign is fueled by a sense among his supporters that America is “rigged,” as the candidate puts it, against people such as them. Like nullifying jurors, they sense a secret-vote opportunity to vent their grievance about this at little or no immediate personal risk.

Against Trump, the press is a particularly ineffective prosecutor, for the obvious reason that “mainstream media” enjoy so little legitimacy among his followers. Only 14 percent of Republicans express trust and confidence in the media, according to Gallup. The figure for independents, who also lean toward Trump, is 30 percent. In fact, sticking it to the “liberal” press is probably one of the things his backers enjoy most.

By and large, the American free press has performed its democratic function with respect to Donald Trump — and then some. Instead of carping about the alleged insufficiency of that vetting, the critics should be reflecting on its futility..."
Trump supporters already know he’s a bad guy. They’re voting for him anyway.

SEA LEVELS DOUBLED BY 2100!

DO YOU CARE - The Old Mountain Goat DOES CARE!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/03/30/antarctic-loss-could-double-expected-sea-level-rise-by-2100-scientists-say/?tid=a_inl&utm_term=.52d17c1897b8

"...Scientists behind a new study published in the journal Nature used sophisticated computer models to decipher a longstanding riddle about how the massive, mostly uninhabited continent surrendered so much ice during previous warm periods on Earth. They found that similar conditions in the future could lead to monumental and irreversible increases in sea levels. If high levels of greenhouse gas emissions continue, they concluded, oceans could rise by close to two meters in total (more than six feet) by the end of the century. The melting of ice on Antarctica alone could cause seas to rise more than 15 meters (49 feet) by 2500.

The startling findings paint a far grimmer picture than current consensus predictions, which have suggested that seas could rise by just under a meter at most by the year 2100. Those estimates relied on the notion that expanding ocean waters and the melting of relatively small glaciers would fuel the majority of sea level rise, rather than the massive ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica..."
If carbon emissions continue unabated, expanding oceans and massive ice melt would threaten global coastal communities, according to new projections.

"WE" REQUIRE EGALITARIAN PUBLIC POLICIES and LIMITS of CAPITALISM - from The Old Mountain Goat!

"...I do not expect conservatives to rally to this part of his case, although I would like them to take more seriously the idea that preserving the very aspects of the system they revere requires more egalitarian public policies and a clear acknowledgment of capitalism’s limits.

This, however, represents the sort of healthy quarrel that people of goodwill in free nations can have with each other after the immediate threat that Trump represents to the democratic left, right and center alike has been turned back.

I know it asks a great deal of my conservative friends not only to oppose Trump but also to support Clinton. But she is the only person standing between us and a United States that abandons our shared commitment to the ideals of inclusion, toleration and, yes, democracy itself..."

Opinion: The Proof of Racism

The New York Times

Dear Times Reader,
You don’t have to be an irredeemable racist to hold some racist views. That’s the point of an Op-Ed today by the author J.D. Vance.

The spectrum of racism, he notes, runs from “former Klansmen like David Duke to a struggling coal miner with some unacceptable opinions.” Acknowledging this spectrum is by no means equating the two ends of it. The racism of Duke and his ilk deserves to be fought with passion and moral clarity. The more common everyday prejudice that’s the focus of Vance’s article demands a subtler, and often inward-focused, struggle.

In both cases, however, we should be clear about why the struggle matters. Fighting racism is not a matter of social niceties or “political correctness.” It’s about reducing an evil that does concrete damage to millions of Americans – every day, still.

If you’re not sure about this – if you accept that racism was once a scourge but wonder if it has been mostly cured – I encourage you to glance at the social science on the subject, including several novel studies. The findings are persuasive.

Résumés containing stereotypical black names are less likely to receive callbacks than identical résumés with stereotypical white names. Such outright discrimination appears to explain “at least one-third of the black-white wage gap,” according to a recent study from researchers at Harvard, Northwestern and Princeton.

In the courtroom, black defendants are more likely to be locked up than otherwise similar white defendants. And in sports – where the stakes aren’t nearly as high, but the statistics are often easier to track – one study found that Major League Baseball umpires expanded their strike zone for white pitchers more than black pitchers. Another found that N.B.A. referees were more likely to call fouls against players of the opposite race.

Is it politically correct to talk about this racism? Maybe. It is, without doubt, factually correct.

EDITING HUMAN EMBRYOS

SOMEDAY, MANY DISEASES MAY BE OMITTED - from The Old Mountain Goat

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/09/22/494591738/breaking-taboo-swedish-scientist-seeks-to-edit-dna-of-healthy-human-embryos?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20160922&utm_campaign=breakingnews&utm_term=nprnews#

"...A scientist in Sweden has started trying to edit the DNA in healthy human embryos, NPR has learned.

The step by the developmental biologist Fredrik Lanner makes him the first researcher known to attempt to modify the genes of healthy human embryos. That has long been considered taboo because of safety and ethical concerns.

Lanner is attempting to edit genes in human embryos to learn more about how the genes regulate early embryonic development. He hopes the work could lead to new ways to treat infertility and prevent miscarriages. He also hopes to help scientists learn more about embryonic stem cells so they can someday use them to treat many diseases.

The fear is that Lanner's work could open the door to others attempting to use genetically modified embryos to make babies..."

PROGRESSIVE vs. CONSERVATIVE THINKING EARTH PLANET ALWAYS GOES FORWARD INTO THE FUTURE - GOOD OR BAD! PROGRESSIVES TRY TO GO FORWARD BECAUS
Introduction
"The Old Mountain Goat"

Since my Joanna has let go of her life, Charlie (my little companion dog - now, also let go of his life) and I (Papa Foote, "The Traveling Man") were still walking down the "road of life" - smelling the thoughts of the world. But now, since my stroke has started to creep into my old body, my mind is still with the "Eagle’s Flying Higher" but mostly, I just want to try to squeeze my thinking and writing into just a few words that count towards a better world - like no more anger and selfish thinking that comes from warring between human clans instead of helping each other in our World! My choices are my own - from my inner self!

"Facts"

Some "Facts" are actually truths that we are able to uncover and understand!

Some "Facts" are only truths until something changes as we become able to understand more!

Some "Facts" will never become truths because we will never be able to understand!

"So"

That is why the human mind has trouble with "factual conclusions"!
