Check out +Alex Lockwood's awesome work on Icon Animation Techniques for Android!
An Introduction to Icon Animation Techniques

Week #1: wrote 27 icon animations for Android
Week #2: learned how to animate SVGs using SMIL and CSS
Week #3: learned the basics of Adobe After Effects to create cooler and more advanced icon animation effects
Week #4,5,6: learned JavaScript and ported 19 icon animations from Android to SVG to use as inline blog post demos
Week #7: rewrote and polished a bunch of animations, planned out structure of blog post
Week #8: writing, editting, rewriting, deleting, rewriting again, editting, repeat...

Don't think I have ever worked this much on a single blog post before... but I wouldn't have it any other way. Let me know what you think, and don't forget to share! :D

Evolving the Google Identity
I'm really proud to have worked with all the incredibly talented people involved in this work.

You can't imagine how many pixels we've pushed around to make this logo perfect everywhere you see it.

We're not done.  There's still a long tail of things to polish, but we're off to a great start.

This is the most fun we've had in the office in a while. We've even made some of those 'Inceptionistic' art pieces into giant posters. Beyond the eye candy, there is actually something deeply interesting in this line of work: neural networks have a bad reputation for being strange black boxes that that are opaque to inspection. I have never understood those charges: any other model (GMM, SVM, Random Forests) of any sufficient complexity for a real task is completely opaque for very fundamental reasons: their non-linear structure makes it hard to project back the function they represent into their input space and make sense of it. Not so with backprop, as this blog post shows eloquently: you can query the model and ask what it believes it is seeing or 'wants' to see simply by following gradients. This 'guided hallucination' technique is very powerful and the gorgeous visualizations it generates are very evocative of what's really going on in the network.

My team has been busy making icons and tools for you to use them... from our new browsable icon library to our amazing ligature powered icon font.  Check it out.

We all wish there were parts of the design process we could automate and simplify. Our new icon library and device metrics tool aim to do just that.

The Icon Library (google.com/design/icons) lets you quickly browse and export icons from the material design icon library, containing over 750 icons. You can export into formats that work well for the web, Android, or iOS.

The new Device Metrics Tool (google.com/design/tool/devices) lets you quickly look up screen specs like screen sizes in DP units, perfect for deciding on an artboard size for mockups. You can even sort by any metric, so you could see the full list in increasing physical screen size.

Check out our latest additions to our material design resources at google.com/design/resources, and let us know what other tools you’d like to see in the comments!
