'The Baby' - A remarkable piano inspired by the patterns in nature
The Baby by Based Upon, priced at £475,000, is a collaboration between Goldfinch Pianos and Based Upon - a London-based artist studio, renowned for its innovative contemporary British art.

The pianos form is based on the repeating spiral patterns omnipresent throughout our universe. From star-studded galaxies to the florets in a sunflower, the fluid curves of the Baby Piano depict these mysterious patterns - so prevalent in nature.

It's called the Twist - a unique Based Upon sculpture - and the result of nine years of design evolution. To date the Twist has appeared as a handful of luxury, limited edition tables and consoles and is now reimagined as an astonishing piano.

The tri-oval top elevates, appearing to twist away from its base, to reveal a baby grand piano. Exclusive hand-finished metals and seductively tactile resins reflect the artist’s studies of the earth’s surface—and scenes taken from outer space.

Only the finest solid spruce, from the Valle de Fiemme in the north Italian Alps, is good enough for Goldfinch master craftsmen. Using treasured, time-honoured techniques, this incredible wood is precisely engineered to create the tonal heart of every Goldfinch piano.

Every detail of a Goldfinch bespoke piano is individually handcrafted, right down to the measurement, calculation, manufacture and fitting of each of the 230 strings. There is simply no other way to achieve that rich, velvety inimitable Goldfinch tone.

Fast access to CryoSat's Arctic ice measurements now available

ESA’s ice mission has become the first satellite to provide information on Arctic sea-ice thickness in near-real time to aid maritime activities in the polar region. CryoSat data is now available within two days of acquisition through a website launched today.

A late afternoon storm came through and produced some amazing cloud structures.

All of these were taken with a Canon 70D and Tokina 11-16mm lens.

Taken in Adairsville, Georgia.

“Impress the circle, spin the wheel—through the color, feel the thrill. Intersect the radius edge—in the crease, the looping wedge. Dazzled in the metal base—illuminating textured space.” ~ Gari Hatch

Young Aspens all in a row. Taken in mid Washington state, I found a grove of these trees. The afternoon sun was creating some interesting shadow play. I call this one the hobbits hole cuz of the little opening at the rear of the tree row.

Now, i'm sure most of you won't remember Agfa Scala monochrome slide film (iso 200).  Back in the day, I took this with my Praktica Mtl 50.  What do you think?  I think the blacks in this film were really nice x

June Bug - Rhizotrogus majalis - Stack

This is a European chafer, the bane of fine upstanding southern lawns throughout the United States. As a child I was fascinated by these beetles and would keep them in shoeboxes with plastic wrap windows.

Despite the nickname “June Bug” the beetles often come out as early April, as was the case with the subject. Life span of the adult (beetle) is short, usually last a couple of weeks. It’s a nocturnal insect and often morning light reveals my back patio littered with carcasses from spring through early fall.

For photography purposes the colors are rather bland but the insect is rich with textures and details, which make them interesting for me to photograph. First tabletop insect stack I ever did was of a June Bug so this is also a good comparison photo to see how much my technique has progressed over the past two years.

Image specs:  Sixty Image Stack on Tabletop Rig - Canon 5D-III, MP-E 65mm  @3.5:1 - f/4 - SS 1/40 - ISO100 - Canon MT24-EX flash at 1/8 power with DIY triangular diffuser. Stacked in Zerene with cleanup in Photoshop.
