The only people who complain about Aster's are folks who think an ethnic restaurant is supposed to be American. Aster's is 100% Ethiopian, and that includes the look from the outdoors. This place could be dropped onto any avenue in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and it would look in place perfectly. But the food, my friend, is exceptional, and having lived in Ethiopia as a missionary, and having eater in many restaurants there, and the homes of the people, THIS is the real thing. Be sure to ask for the red or hot dishes. You just are not getting the whole treatment if you don't get some fire. Call ahead, and Aster will probably make you cai "red" shoro, which she did for us.

Love this place and go every time I visit my family in Austin. Everything is homemade, fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive. I eat only the vegetarian/vegan dishes so can't speak to the ones with meat.

This place was rude, plastic silverware, flies swarming everywhere and every item on the buffet looked like baby food-put in a blender with a ton of spices and slopped on the lunch buffet. They tried their hardest to deny my groupon but I put a fight and won. No refills on colas either? tea had floaties -gross. No air condition, just fans blowing the dust around. I know why they failed health dept inspections alot.

Before moving to Austin, I couldn't have begun to describe how delicious Ethiopian food can be. Every dish is such a complex combination of flavors and spices. The Doro Wat is hands down my favorite dish@ I could sponge up every last bit of the sauce with the injera bread. I've had the pleasure of eating at Aster's a number of times, including a couple visits for a few different birthday celebrations and the people who run this place are so nice and accommodating. You really get the feel that you're eating at a family run restaurant that cares about your experience. I've only been for dinner but I'd love to come for their notoriously filling lunch buffet one day.

I had never had ethiopian food before and didn't really know what to expect, but I have to say this stuff was love at first bite!! The flavors were so deep and colorful, and the injera complimented everything very well. I got the vegetarian eggplant dish (don't remember what it'd called, it's #17 on the menu) and it was delicious. Our server was friendly and I really appreciated the little hand wipes at the end. Some might bash the atmosphere, but I thought it was very fitting and gave the place that homey, authentic, not-trying-too-hard kind of feel.

Awesome place, the staff is always very warm and hospitable every time I come. As a native Ethiopian I can personally testify for this place and say that this restaurant is probably the closest anybody has come to my mommas cooking. I love the quaint atmosphere it reminds me of eating back home in Ethiopia. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for something a little bit outside of your usual lunch or diner.

A wonderful variation for the vegetarians in your life. Traditional cooking from Ethiopia. The family that runs the place are truly generous; they will happily talk you through the dishes as well as make recommendations. It is hard to go wrong with food you eat with your hands and when your food is served on a savory gluten pancake (closest analogy for Americans). Everything is tasty and spicy (not HOT rather spiced). They do slow cook their lamb to a wonderful full flavor too. Try all the side dishes (salads?) as they help cut strong flavors with delightful veggies and viniger. Okay i'm gushing and salivating. I think I am going to talk my wife into some takeout :)

The restaurant is very small and basic. I went with coworkers for their lunch buffet. The food seemed authentic and smelled good. I tried a few things but had no idea what they were or what was in them due to no description or labels. Most of what I had was tasty. I wanted to try more but there was a ton of flies taking advantage of the open food. The chicken drumpstick I got of the buffet was cold and I could tell it had been sitting out for awhile. I'd like to try it again but not go for the buffet.
