Traveling the USA these many years, I started a chocolate shake research project. I rate shakes based on flavor, texture, thickness, and presentation (though that doesn't really count against a shake, just a nice bit of detail). Penny Ice Creamery, is the new #1 best shake in the nation, that I've come across so far. Ah. Maze. Ing. Amazing!!!! I got teary-eyed it was so good. Perfection.

They only have a few flavours at any time, but those I tried were all good. Each tasted quite distinctly of what it was supposed to, yet without the strong artificial flavour that you can get with some other ice creams. Also, I didn't try the home-made waffle cones, but they looked good!

The flavors they had tasted just like what they were advertised as (the rose tasted like roses smell). My only gripe is that they were all really different flavors and the price was pretty steep. If you go, get toasted marshmallow on top of chocolate with waffle cone bits... really really good and it tastes like a s'more :D

If you are walking around downtown Santa Cruz, go one block out of your way to visit this place. It is a gem! They have lots of exotic daily flavors to choose from and they are so rich that a little is all you need. For example, here is one of the current choices: Caramel Chocolate Covered Pretzel. And that is only the tip of the iceberg for this quality little ice cream place that specializes in unique. The stroll will help you to burn off the calories.

When in Santa Cruz, ALWAYS stop by The Penny Ice Creamery!! The first time I came here was about 3 years ago and it was within a week after I dined at the French Laundry and had Thomas Keller's famous signature buttered popcorn ice cream. By happy coincidence, Penny's also had buttered popcorn as a flavor that day so I decided to give it a try. Wow! Dare I say it was better than a 3 Michelin starred restaurant that was once ranked number 1 restaurant in the world?!? YES!! Since then I have stopped by whenever I could and send everyone I know here. I lived in Santa Cruz for years before and never liked Marianne's (Sorry guys, I'm just not a fan of their flavor or icy texture). I'm so happy that Penny's came along to change up the scene. Bonus points for being across from Atlantis Fantasy (best comic shop in town!!)

Well, it's good, locally owned ice cream. They also have some pretty unusual flavors throughout the year and make their own cones fresh. I find the long lines/waits to be unjustified though. Nothing I've tried on some 7 different visits has floored me. If there's a line out the door I usually just hop over to one of the places on Pacific, or maybe go to Marianne's/Betty's(who carries Marianne's).

Just went in for the first time today, got an amazing salted truffle crunch or something like that. This place is the real deal, they make all their ice cream in house, and get milk and dairy from a local farm. I also ended up knowing on of the guys working back there! If you're looking for some good ice cream for after dinner, this is the place to go. Walkable from anywhere downtown. Also, every 15 scoops you buy earns you a free one! Cashed in on my friend's today.
