Big Bertha, the Longhorn Band's 8 foot diameter bass drum, is a well-known and well-loved sight at football games in Texas Memorial Stadium. Originally built in 1922 for the University of Chicago, Bertha moved to Austin in 1955 and has been a Longhorn Band fixture ever since. The drum can be seen in the north end zone during all games in the stadium and is tended by a group known as the "Bertha Crew".

Saturday's UT game against the University of Southern California was an exciting match. I was on the home sidelines just before half time, waiting for the band to start its performance, when I discovered that I was standing right next to Matthew McConaughey. I snapped several pictures of him (channeling my inner paparazzo?) including a couple of decent headshot-style close-ups. When I was processing the results, though, I thought this frame made the most interesting and photoblog-worthy image from the set.

Staying with the rodeo theme, this picture popped up as I was looking for something to post this morning. It seemed rather appropriate this week as we worry about friends in the path of Hurricane Florence Carolinas and others here at home.

This was taken on October 7th last year before the start of the Brent Thurman Memorial Bull Ride at Dripping Springs Ranch Park.

Let's take a break from marching bands and football and head back to July and Dripping Springs Rodeo. Here's one of the intrepid mutton busters leaving the chute. Some people won't admit it but we all know that most people come to the rodeo to watch kids riding sheep rather than cowboys on broncos or bulls :-)

The University of Texas Longhorns are back in action so that means it's time for more Longhorn Band photography at Texas Memorial Stadium. This shot of some of the members of the tuba section was taken during Saturday's home game against the Tulsa Hurricanes.

Scott Lewis was part of the group photographing Belterra Village with us last Saturday morning. He made the mistake of sitting opposite me during lunch so I used him as a test subject for the 25mm f/1.2 lens that the nice people at Olympus included in their loaner kit.
