#didyouknow   On this day in 1901, Connecticut became the first state to pass a speed limit law regulating motor vehicles, 12 mph in cities and 15 mph on country roads.

Speed limits had been set earlier in the United States for non-motorized vehicles: In 1652, the colony of New Amsterdam (now New York) issued a decree stating that “[N]o wagons, carts or sleighs shall be run, rode or driven at a gallop” at the risk of incurring a fine starting at “two pounds Flemish,” or about $150 in today’s currency.

DO NOT GO TO ACA AUTOMOTIVE. In June, 2014 I had work done to my vehicle at ACA including getting my radiator replaced. I purchased a one year/12,000 mile warranty at time of service. April, 2015 my radiator was leaking. ACA denied service to my vehicle stating I needed the radiator flushed prior to them repairing it. I asked them why and they couldn't give me a straight answer, stating that there was corrosion caused by some unknown incident and they wouldn't service my radiator until it had been power flushed. I informed them no one had service the radiator except them, they still denied service though I was still within the warranty I purchased. After I was ready to leave and get the radiator flushed, they came out to the parking lot and told me they could, in fact, service the vehicle "no questions asked." When I picked up my vehicle the next day, the radiator, hoses, clamps and coolant sensor had all been replaced. I don't understand why everything had to be replaced so soon and I don't understand why they tried to deny service when I was well within warranty. I had an estimate for a different repair with them. $900 dollars at ACA, actually got it fixed at a different AAA approved location, less than $200 including labor. Need I say more?

Sadie, First, I want to thank you for taking the time to review our business. I never like to hear that a customer has had a less than perfect experience with my staff. I have attempted to email you and my customer service representative has attempted to call you. It is hard for any business to assist in a customer complaint if they are unable to speak with you and attempt to make it right. Looking at your history, it looks like not only was the radiator replaced but also both radiator hoses and sensor were taken care of for you under warranty and you were not charged anything when you had to bring the vehicle back. I have spoken to my staff and seen a picture taken of your cooling system and it does appear that the system has rust contamination and has been poorly serviced over a long period of time. This lack of maintenance can and will cause damage to the cooling system components and most facilities would not have stood up to the plate as mine has. We took care of everything for you and even replaced additional components to assure your satisfaction... at the expense of the facility being that the parts replaced could not be returned to the vendor. Also, I looked into the complaint about your repair performed at another facility for the oxygen sensor stated on another review site. The estimate we provided you at the total cost of $900 was for a lot more than just the replacement of the oxygen sensor and as your estimate shows. We too estimated the cost to replace the oxygen sensor at $209.95 I would greatly appreciate a response to discuss your experience and learn from what we might have done wrong. I look at every customer as a learning experience; and would really like the opportunity to make things right. For your inconvenience and to show you our confidence in the parts installed; I have doubled your warranty from the original installation date from 1 year/12,000 mile warranty to our 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. Being that you have received everything else at no expense... I don't know what else I can do. Much Appreciated, Adam Kalb

The good, the bad, and the ugly The ugly <---- bird pooped on my car one minute after I washed it, sparkling clean, inside and out, to prepare my darling 1985 Toyota Hilux for long term storage. 31 years baby and still running! That means that my truck came out the same year as "Back to the future". Damn. The bad <---- The DMV requires that my decades old whip must be serviced at a "Star certified location" which is a repair shop that has stricter requirements from the smog board. After all, my car has no computer, no fuel injection, and is supposedly a "gross polluter" The DMV's mom is a gross polluter :) The Good (The GREAT) Take my truck into ACA, ask for a smog check. I have a coupon for the smog check, but nooooo! They will not honor it, as it only applies to newer vehicles manufactured after a certain year.... So my super special old skool whip smog check is suddenly about 70 bucks. I also hear that the service will take one hour ten minutes. Well now, I can't take the fact that I'm two months expired, so I tell them, go ahead, lets do this. 1) I get a ten dollar complimentary discount, thanks to Adam. Super cool. 2) The smog check takes about thirty minutes, they got to my truck fast as hell! 3) I pass! And Duc, the technician treated my car with respect and we even had a nice conversation about when I was laying down chin deep in a rice paddy in Vietnam waiting for VC soldiers to ambush and stab me. 4) Adam helps me interpret the smog check results, and gives me solid advice for lowering my numbers for the next check, in 2017. Damn time flies. My truck will be 34 years old then, and guess where it's going back to for the next smog? ACA 5) Great customer service, if you think otherwise you are an ignorant wretch. You can tell they are really trying to make you happy. - Highly deserving of the Press telegram readers choice awards! Thanks again!

I have had my car smogged twice at ACA. Nothing too crazy, of course, but each time I've been in, the staff have been friendly and efficient, and I definitely feel as if they are trustworthy. My car was finished in a timely manner, even on a Saturday afternoon. They also seem to be generous with discounts--I printed out a coupon from their website ahead of time and saved! Thanks, ACA :)

When I called them on the phone before a smog check, they were super nice. Their service, when in the building, was also just as quick and kind. I used a coupon from a penny saver to get the smog check for only $38 (about half their regular price)! They said it would take a little less than an hour, but I believe I was out of there within 30 minutes! Talk about being fast!

This is THE place to go to if you want good, fast, and super friendly service. ACA Automotive nails it on the head again with their service. This is my 2nd visit now and I think this is my confirmed spot for anything dealing with car repairs. Once again, let me repeat, GO HERE if you want a good deal and a friendly staff. I can't even think of any cons with this place. I would only recommend you bring a magazine and some sunglasses if you're planning to sit outside with the wait. ACA definitely deserves their 5 stars! Will repeat!

I'm prompted to write my first review ever because I had such a HORRIBLE experience. I towed in my car to ACA Automotive because it was the closest. I should have steered clear... My key wouldn't go inside the ignition of my ford focus and needed to get the ignition lock replaced. Labor and parts came out to a little over $400. When I left my car at the shop, I was asked to leave my original key and my spare. When the car was fixed, I had my brother pick it up for me since they close the shop really early and I couldn't make it out by 5:30pm. Unbeknownst to my brother, the shop kept my spare key. When I called the shop the next day (this past Friday) asking what happened to my spare key (now used only for opening the door), I got the runaround from one of the guys from the shop. Instead of apologizing, he acted surprised that I would want my spare key back. I said, of course I want my key back, it's mine. He went on to say that one of the mechanics had thrown it away but that he would have him look through the trash for it. I've never spoken to a more condescending person. It was such a HORRIBLE interaction from him. He had a heavy, belittling and passive aggressive attitude. He should not deal with customers if he is incapable of handling his stress level. Poor, poor customer service. He said he would call me back once they found my key. I had a missed call on Friday and a voice message from him only asking that I return the phone call. I called on Monday and I didn't realize I was transferred to him so I proceeded to explain the entire situation. He cut me off and said that he called me Friday morning and left me a message saying he had found my key. (I absolutely DID NOT have a message from him saying that). He continued cutting me off and said that I could just go ahead and pick it up anytime. He was really on edge and ridiculously rude. I remember thinking when I walked into ACA Automotive how everyone looked to have their smiles plastered on. Unauthentic and borderline cartoonish. Their facade of friendliness snaps hard under pressure. In no moment did I accuse him of withholding my key, but for whatever reason, he was quick to be defensive and condescending. I should have gone straight to the Ford dealership where they gave me a quote for $500, which included the ignition cylinder, labor and TWO new keys. I would have gladly paid the $100 difference for a second key and excellent customer service. I'm very disappointed that this shop is even AAA approved. It's misleading because AAA is such a great and serious company so the least you can expect from their associates is excellence at all time. I'm getting in contact with AAA to share my experience and ask that they be more careful about which shops they approve. Poor customer service and overpricing should be the name of ACA Auto.

Monica, First, I want to thank you for voicing your opinion and letting us know where we failed. It is customer's like yourself that assist us in becoming better with every service. Second, I want to apologize for my staff member. No one, no matter the situation should ever be spoken to in a condescending tone and/or even in a slightly rude manner for that matter. I would love to discuss this situation with you and make sure we do what we can to address each and every one of your complaints and work with you to resolve any issues. It is our job to stand up to the plate and take care of any customer that is not 100% satisfied with our service; and I promise to do so. I have asked my Customer Satisfaction Manager to call you with the phone number on your invoice, he stated that he has left you a message. When you get a chance, please reach out to either one of us so we can speak to you and try to make this right. Much Appreciated, -- Adam Kalb President ACA Automotive Adam@acaauto.com Winner of Press Telegram's Readers Choice Best Auto Repair Shop 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015!!!

I love these guys. They have been my mechanics for over four years now, ever since I moved to the area. Every time I go in, no matter what service I need done or funny noise I need to have checked out, these guys are always incredibly friendly, reasonably priced, and provide quick and reliable service. They're the best!
