I created a type-safe, boilerplate-free, key-value store for Scala. If you use Scala and need to store data, it may be a simpler solution than Slick: http://www.reddit.com/r/scala/comments/1nh3cn/persistentmap_a_typesafe_boilerplatefree_keyvalue/

A new batch of Scala papers. Of particular interest to me is the probabilistic programming DSL.

Russ Roberts of EconTalk interviews Bruce Schneier. They touch on the absurdities of America's preoccupation with terrorism, which is obviously a timely topic.

Here's an ICML 2013 paper that uses some ideas from functional programming / abstract algebra. I think there's a lot of potential in the intersection of ML and such ideas.

The Soylent funding campaign doubled its target in the first 24hrs, despite the cheesy video. I signed up at $65; here's hoping it's not snake oil.

An FYI on retaining good vision despite staring at a computer all day: I've been doing eye exercises since the 9th grade, in particular "pencil pushups",  whenever my vision starts to blur. It has always worked to restore my vision, and I still don't need glasses. Today I did some searching and found that these exercises are a generally effective way to treat convergence insufficiency, a common vision problem associated with "prolonged, visually-demanding, near-centered tasks" (e.g. computer work).
