Corsendonk Pater Abbey Brown, 6.5%. From Lidl. The opening taste is roasted malt, some chocolate notes and toffee lacings. Dark fruits are evident and the finish is bitter-sweet. Not bad AND on offer at £4.99 for 4 bottles!

Birra & Blues Black Blues Abbey, 6.3%. Big short lived berry fruit flush at the outset, followed by a slap of sourness. Woody and pine notes follow up and lead into a rather sour finish. There are many things gokng on, but a touch hard to pick up on. Big flavours, interesting but precarious balance which can come across a bit haphazard. I was still trying to work out if I liked it or not right up to the last mouthfull, which at that point I decided I must have because there was none left!

Mordue Brewery's Panda Frog Project E=PF2 Eldorado and Ekuanot Wheat Beer, 4.3%. Slight tropical fruits in the first tasting, but rapidly giving way to a good bitterness. The finish is very long, dry and satisfying. Very well crafted.

Two from Erdinger Weissbrau. Erdinger Dunkel has a sweet caramel opening, then yest esters under dark fruit, wheat and slight chocolate notes sit on the palate. The mouthfeel is quite viscous. This leads us to the gently drying and nicely bitter finish. Erdinger Hefe-Weizen also has sweet notes at the start and a lightly fruity main body. Yeasty bread and some fruit come through and lead to a subtle floral and dry finish. Both were 5.3%.

Signature Brew Progressive Modern Bitter 4.8%. Lightly bitter after a creamy malt start, some zest and rind lacing with a nice spiced finish. Not too bad, but needed just something more to lift it.
