I've mentioned the whole Godai non-controversy before in class, but here's a fleshed out polemic from Don Roley. There's plenty of properly esoteric knowledge in our traditions, but when it comes to the Gogyō no Kata just consider deeply the idea of lowering your hips more.

Lots more sword tonight. As mentioned in class, please practice proper tai sabaki before, during and after each step in the kata - it's all an extension of kihon.

The difference in practice of kata without this is akin to the difference between fermenting something and simply letting something rot, similar on paper but very different in the final result!

In preparation of the seminar in April, for the month of March we’ll be reviewing sword kihon and all of Kukishin Ryū and Togakure Ryū sword material in depth. Please bring your bokutō and saya, wooden ninjatō and kodachi, as well as your notebooks to class, and be sure to practice at home.

We'll be returning to Kotō Ryū in April with the Hekitō Gata, before moving onto the Okuden and then most likely onto a year or two of Gyokko Ryū Kosshijutsu.
