Oyster Bay, Mayne Island BC... where have all the visitors gone?

Another lovely day today. I’ll take it!

Gallery visitors from the state of Washington have made an appointment for later this morning. But maybe a stroll down a trail by the sea before then. What do you think?

Morning sun warms the studio loft as my coffee grows cold while reading favoured passages in THE BREAK OF DAY by Colette. We meet this afternoon, our small book club. We will meet, curling at the edges of the low round table in the great room with all the richness of sunflower petals supporting the season’s late summer seeds. I suspect the sun will join us as well....

“Only in this sun-steeped country can a heavy table, a wicker chair, an earthenware jar crowned with flowers, and a dish whose thick enamelling has run over the edge, make a complete furnishing.” page 62 first published in 1928, yet timeless.

I think of Nice, France and the time I climbed the hillside between the narrow streets of the old city... to see the bluest of seas.

All the best of Monday to you!

Today, for something a little different, the Terrill Welch Gallery introduces a painting pairing from Terrill Welch’s private art collection. This small work, framed matted under museum glass, is by David Sandum and inspired by Cézanne and his mountain. Though Terrill thinks of David as a Norwegian painter. He is clear on his profile that he is a Swedish painter living in Norway. (Terrill’s Norwegian grandmother would smile at this refined clarification.) David is the founder of the annual artists Twitter Art Exhibition fundraiser. His award winning memoir I’LL RUN TILL THE SUN GOES DOWN shares his experiences with depression and how painting and art has saved him. David’s art work (which includes more than paintings) is internationally shown and collected. Terrill and David’s paths have crossed so many times over the years that their exchanges constitute a friendship though they have never laid eyes on each other in person.

This painting by David Sandum, one of two in Terrill’s private collection, has been paired with two of Terrill Welch’s paintings also inspired by Cézanne and his mountain.

It is with deep pleasure that we provide a link so that you can check out his paintings and writings further.

More about David and his work can be found at:

Showing for the first time in “Between Islands and the Salish Sea” at the Galiano Library...

“High up on the ridge on a narrow point of land I catch my breath and search across Active Pass to find the familiar twin ridge on Mayne Island below which is my home.”

The thunder rolled and every once in a while big fat rain drops would splatter to the ground. But I kept walking. I had left my raincoat but had one for the camera. We were good! The air was reasonably warm and the light - Oh! The light!

So went my afternoon of gathering winter reference materials for studio work. These are just from my phone. I haven’t uploaded the images from my camera yet...

Just as we were going to dinner last evening, we spied a double rainbow through the trees. We arrived at the Galiano Resort and, instead of going to be seated, I walked through the building and down to the water with only my iPhone 7+ in my hand. But, with a bit of quick puzzling I decided on an approach. So, just for fun, here is a double rainbow over Mayne Island. May it brighten your Monday....

Morning rays drift across the home studio and I muse about getting to the gallery to work on a painting in progress that I left there to rest on Monday. There is much to do and painting is not really at the top of the list. But my brushes and spirit never seem to accept the suggested order of things!

How I spent my birthday at the end of August this year and the work-in-progress and coming to rest. These two boys have me laughing and being surprised by the ordinary more than most!

Measure twice pack once for another off island solo exhibition.

This is my process for putting together a solo show that requires that I get everything right the first time!

1. I decide on a theme for the show. “Between Islands and the Salish Sea”.

2. Many gallery spaces will have drawings with measurements but sometimes, like this one, I must go and do the measuring myself and take photographs of the space. Which is good to do when I can because it gives me an idea of the lighting and traffic flow.

3. Now I am ready to sit down and tentatively decide what paintings will go where. This is a pen and paper plus iPad with inventory up on the screen task with lots of scratching out and deciding again.

I think we have it figured! You can take a behind the scenes look at what I have decided at https://www.artworkarchive.com/profile/terrill-welch/collection/between-islands-and-the-salish-sea

The solo show will open a week from tomorrow at the beautiful Galiano Library on Galiano Island. Many thanks to the Galiano Library selection committee for choosing my work to be featured this fall.

The Terrill Welch Gallery will be sat by Katherine Cox Stevenson and Jody Waldie for this coming Saturday and Sunday while I am packing, moving and hanging paintings in our neighbouring island.

Last call - Beauty of Oils Skill Building Masterclass $350 CAD by e-transfer or $275 USD by Paypal

The Beauty of Oils Skill Building fall masterclass offers an introductory unit “Beginning before the Beginning” which is available immediately and is then followed by weekly lessons starting September 13, 2018. Each of the 10 lessons are available on the Monday for both online and in-person students. Online students may complete the lesson anytime that works for them during the week. In-person students (only a couple of spaces left) will meet on the Thursday of each week from 1-4 pm at the Mayne Island Community Centre. The focus is on using non-solvent oil paints for beginner and experienced painters wanting to learn a new medium and advance their painting skills. The class is instructed by international artist and teacher Terrill Welch and includes notes and video demonstrations and instructor feedback on your work in progress. Terrill takes students through the basics of masterly and painterly use of oils using water mixable oil paints. She offers skill development about painting with natural light from life and using reference materials using wet-into-wet painting methods. Each lesson has a specific focus intended to build towards a strong ongoing oil painting practice.
