Can Freeview channel ordering be improved? It’s your opportunity to contribute.

On March 29th 2012 DMOL (Digital Multiplex Operators Limited) released the second phase of its Logical Channel Numbering (LCN) Consultation.

In its most basic form LCN numbering determines which number is allocated to each channel. This for example determines that BBC1 is on channel 001 and ITV3 is on channel 010.

The proposals identify that the current system has number of issues:

• The General Entertainment category has overflowed its original allocated 1-49 block.
• The Adult Genre has overflowed its original allocated block at 90, and now is split into two blocks.
• There is limited room for expansion in the News genre.
• New developments such as IPTV will require new allocation blocks.

The impact of LCN numbering has a significant impact on both the user and channel operator. The LCN slot a channel is allocated will influence the chances a user will ‘discover’ that channel by surfing or via the EPG. This may affect the viewing figures and subsequent advertising revenue the channel achieve.

For the user the proposed changes spread the numbering over a much larger numerical range. This will require some familiarisation which may be troublesome for the elderly or users with specific accessibility requirements.

The proposed line-up has been extracted from the document and is included as the image for this post.

The consultation is open to all stakeholders and the general public. All responses should reach DMOL by 17:00 on 24 May 2012.
Please indicate on your responses whether all, some, or none of the information contained within your response should be kept confidential.
Responses can be emailed to consultation@dmol.co.uk or mailed in hard copy to the following address:

All TVonics products are fully compatible with the LCN system. With the possible exception of requiring a re-scan existing products will work with any new proposals.
