The recent request from President Donald Trump’s vote fraud commission for a mountain of sensitive data from the states sparked a backlash and baffled many officials — not only because of concerns about privacy and security but because an organization already exists doing much of the same work.
“There’s no reason to re-invent the wheel when we’re already here…and we do it very well,” said Shane Hamlin, executive director of the Election Information Registration System, also known as ERIC.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday said he is postponing consideration of the GOP health care bill while Republican Sen. John McCain recovers from successful surgery for a blood clot.
McCain, 80, underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye on Friday and will spend the next week recovering in his home state of Arizona. The surgery was successful and McCain is resting comfortably at home in good condition, the Mayo Clinic said.

President Donald Trump defended his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer promising damaging information about Hillary Clinton, blaming the media for making "a very big deal over something that really a lot of people would do."
"My son is a wonderful young man. He took a meeting with a Russian lawyer, not a government lawyer but a Russian lawyer," Trump said in a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. "From a practical standpoint most people would have taken that meeting it's called opposition research or research into your opponent."

Details of the highly anticipated Senate health care bill revision released Thursday shows the bill keeps in place deep cuts to Medicaid and the elimination of the current mandate requiring people to purchase insurance.
But changes designed to address concerns of both moderate and conservative Republicans who had different objections to the original bill are also in the new version, including a last-minute addition from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas to allow individuals to purchase cheaper, skimpier health plans. It also keeps some of the Obamacare taxes on the wealthy as an enticement for moderate votes.
