Are family curses and personal demons real?

I don't subscribe too heavily in family curses and tangible personal demons.  But every time I watch Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, it makes me wonder.

If you haven't seen it, one of the primary themes of the movie is the idea that there was a curse/demon that passed from Bruce's Father to him.  In the movie's climactic moment, Bruce defeated the demon so it could not destroy his son, Brandon.

Not a bad plot point from a culture that believed in such ideas.  The strange thing is Bruce Lee died 6 days before the release of Enter The Dragon, which would prove to be his breakout role/movie.  It was not covered in the movie, but Bruce's death is surrounded in mystery.  It could have been an allergic reaction, a bad mixture of drugs, his engagement with electric muscle stimulation, a delayed response to a "Touch of Death" he received weeks earlier, etc.  The final investigation concluded "death by misadventure".

Now Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story was released on May 7, 1993.  Brandon Lee was killed on March 31, 1993 during final filming of The Crow, which was and would be his breakout role/movie.  The means by which he was killed with a gun firing blanks was extremely odd and not something that has occurred often, if ever again.  It could likely also be categorized as "death by misadventure".

Dragon must have been completely finished when Brandon died, 37 days before its theatrical release.  Producers could not have added this major theme to the movie to cash in on the tragedy.  It's eerie how the untimely deaths (32 and 28) of father and son mirrored each other.  And the latter's occurred right at the cusp of a movie that proudly proclaimed that his father had made him safe by destroying the family demon.

What is the lesson here?  To light incense and respect the power of family demons?  If you defeat your family demons, don't celebrate the victory in a movie?  That you're not really living your life if you are unable to "die by misadventure"?
