It's an election year, which means talk of politics. I was raised to keep politics and religion out of public conversations, and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

If you're making regular political or religious (including anti-religious) statements, I'm going to uncircle you. Sorry, but that's the way it's going to be. We're not going to convince each other of our beliefs, and if we both agree, then there's no point in discussing it. I'm an open-minded guy, and I relish private polite discussion of politics and religion, but most internet-based discussions quickly go south.

After the election, I'll re-circle a lot of folks, but the same rules apply. I'm here for gaming, technology, funny stuff, etc. I've got my religion and politics pretty much figured out already, and don't require further doses of either.

Thanks for listening.

Its so tempting to reply back "God would hate republicans, if he existed".  But I'm not going to do that ;->

Nexus 7 users: If you haven't already figured it out, the N7 is very picky when it comes to chargers. Test it on whatever chargers you're planning on using before taking a trip with it. Don't just see if it's charging; see how long it takes to charge; some of the tests from xda-developers show it charging, but taking ten hours or more to charge with third-party chargers and cables.

The more you know...

Yup, they're almost always good with the original charger, but they don't always work with aftermarket chargers. Sometimes it's the power specs, sometimes it's not. More here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791717

Finding Kurt at GenCon:

Look for the heavy-set bald guy with a goatee, probably in a gaming-related t-shirt.

Today is the last day to vote!

It's that time of year again, when I ask for your vote on a few of the gaming projects I've worked on over the past year or so. Our GMing advice site "Gnome Stew" is up again for Best Blog, and our book "Masks: 1,000 NPCs..." is up for both Best Aid/Accessory and (ta-da!) Product of the Year.

It'll only take about 30 seconds, and doesn't sign you up for spam or anything else.
- Head on over to http://www.ennie-awards.com/vote/
- Scroll down to Best Aid/Accessory (about a fifth of the way down), and rank "Masks: 1,000 Memorable NPCs for Any RPG" a 1.
- Scroll down to Best Blog (about a third of the way down), and rank "Gnome Stew" a 1.
- Scroll down to Product of the Year (right by Best Blog), and rank "Masks: 1,000 NPCs" a 1.
- Feel good about helping me and the rest of the Gnomes out.

Thank you very much,

Kurt

Hello, all my new associates!

I'm on G+ for three things:
Tabletop RPGs and associated nerdiness, including Gen Con.
Firearms and associated subjects (hunting, competition, etc).
Casual conversation about life, families, and everything else.

I don't go for politics or social commentary or pro- or anti-religious screeds. We won't change each other's minds here, and I'd rather focus on what we have in common than what we disagree about.

Even if some of your interests coincide with mine, if I find too much socio-political fluff (especially in a campaign year), you'll be culled. Sorry if you're offended, but that's how I'm going to handle things.

If you're reading this, you're probably in my Gaming circle (or will be soon). If you want to be in my Firearms or Gen Con circle, please let me know. :-)

Starting a "firearms related" Circle. Topics will include training, reloading, weapon selection, RKBA, and such. I'm open-minded, both in terms of subject matter and of membership.

Let me know if you're interested.

I think you have a pretty good idea as to which circles to add me. :) I don't think I have bought any C&R firearms since my last renewal and I should probably buy one before my renewal is due. The BATFE doesn't seem like it when people have a FFL and don't use it.

Apart from all/most mentioned above, for Nexus7, you might want to get Volume+ (paid version) to enhance the audio output of the device when not used with headphones for the times you want to watch video/movie with some friend instead of watching it alone. I feel, the in-built sound is low to be used without headphones.

Gnome Stew is up for Site of the Year!

Please vote for us, and not those smelly little lizard-dog things. Voting is today-only, so don't put it off until tomorrow (unless you're a Kobold, then voting is tomorrow-only).

Neal Stephenson named his new book "README". Doesn't he know that geeks almost always ignore anything with that title?

So, ReamDE. Is it a story about 500 pages in a stack in Delaware?

We have been given the power of the Circle, yet some among us have not seen the light, and continue befouling others' Streams with our personal and private lives.

We claim to be the technical elite of society, the builders of computers, the coders of powerful software, the creators of entire worlds, and the masters of games, yet we cannot seem to use the concept of the Google Plus Circle.

If all of your posts are made to "Your circles" or to "Public" (like this one is), then you're basically on Facebook, sharing everything with everyone. Since geeks like logical contradictions, let's try this one: Less is more. Less sharing leads to more meaningful sharing.

So take a moment and revisit your Circles. I'm interested in tabletop RPGs, science fiction and fantasy media (not including anime), and things you can discuss with a perfect stranger. Politics, religion (and atheism), and divisive social topics are not welcome. Leave me out of them, or I will ignore or block you. (This includes the pseudonym wars. I don't care about them.)

One last thing: Yes, we're geeks; we share at least one interest. But the geeky assumption that we therefore must share all interests is simply not true. I'm not a fan of modern comics, anime, or 'all things Japanese'. Heck, there are probably quite a few topics that we do not share a common viewpoint on. Let's focus on the things we do have in common.

Thanks for listening...

An app that volunteers people for circles would solve half of my problem with the G+ model, but not the other half. (Because it's all about me, dammit! ;-)

If I have to follow someone to filter what they see with any granularity, which makes G+ better for them, it makes G+ worse for me. I want to follow people to hear what they have to say, not so I can serve as their filter mechanism.
