Can anyone help David please:

“I used to do a wee bit of shooting and after gutting/skinning a hare was advised to give it a wash down with a jug of boiling water to get rid of the ? wauch, which was the strong smell, before jointing for cooking. Can’t seem to find any reference to this word - I grew up in New Aberdour and can’t believe it’s local to this village. Can you help?”

Scaffie is a word common around Scotland and is often also spelt Scaffy. Scaffies translate from Doric to refuse and rubbish collectors, be they dustmen or women. The word origins are from the collection of garbage throughout the years when road sweepers and binmen were called scavengers. Through the decades this has been shortened and translated through Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to Scaffies.
