LDC nurse in ‘eye-opening’ Rwanda trip!

Geri Gray helped to provide free healthcare to more than 200 people during a trip to Rwanda.
The Diabetes Specialist Nurse and DESMOND educator supported people with Type 2 diabetes or at risk of the condition during the week-long personal mission.
She said: “It was a really eye-opening experience. Many of the people struggle to access healthcare services due to financial reasons, there is a cost just to walk into a government health clinic.
“What we also realised through observations of cooking methods and descriptions of the local diet, was that salt was added to most dishes. Changes to this behaviour were encouraged during the group education sessions.”

Geri travelled out to the African country on Saturday, June 13, and returned on Monday, June 22.

Here at the Leicester Diabetes Centre we have a wide range of research studies that look at areas such as early detection, prevention, structured education, and new therapies for diabetes.
We have been successful in various academic and pharmaceutical studies targeting people with diabetes.
Leicester Diabetes Centre is one of the largest facilities in europe for carrying out first class clinical research in diabetes.

Why get involve in our research?
• All research is performed to the highest quality and ethical standards.
• You may have access to new education programmes and the latest equipment, tests and treatment options available.
• Gain information about your own health and wellbeing.
• Help others by contributing to medical research.
• Have a voice by sitting on our patients groups.
• Assist in improving patient care in the NHS through clinical research and advances in medical knowledge.
• Some studies may offer a compensation or an inconvinience fee for your participation.
