Questions & Tips -

Good news, bad news regarding trying to use the Mavericks Wi-Fi driver under Yosemite.

The good news is that Kext Drop works swimmingly under Yosemite, deposit not being explicitly mentioned on the creators site. The bad news is that although the IO802.11Family.kext file is copied over just find, when the machine is rebooted, I see the AirPortBrcm4331 driver loaded, and not the AirPortBrcm4360 driver it selects with the newer Yosemite package. Fortunately, my BearExtender Turbo is here to save the day.

Here's a head-scratcher for the Synology crowd. I wanted to experiment with using my own certificate, rather than the self-signed one that they generate. Under Control Panel | Security | Certificate there's an Import option. It then asks for your cert and your private key. I've exported these both in a .cer and .p12 file from Keychain Access, but the import fails with a "File encoding must be saved as UTF-8" error. Synology support basically said it's not their problem since it's an external certificate.

Questions & Tips -

A recent listener question was regarding the running of Mail.app rules when the machine in question was asleep. We surmised that it may be due to Power Nap, but I noticed that my older MacBook Pro (Early 2008) which doesn't support Power Nap was also doing this. My digging about in the Console and further research revealed it's most likely due to Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy, per this handy article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3774

When a Mac computer is in sleep mode, it can continue sharing services, such as iTunes and iPhoto library sharing, printer sharing, file sharing, and screen sharing.

Experimenting with photo upload, this is one I took today with my Lumix DMC-ZS7 from South Pine Creek Beach, one of the smaller beaches located here in Fairfield, CT.
