I really wish I could talk to a dev lead for G+ and tell him "I know you are trying to get more people to use your service, but when you keep changing the layout every month or so, you are kind of sticking it to the people who are already using G+".

I just discovered that installing the SDK broke the build system for an existing qt4 project I was working on. I'm guessing this is just qt4 -> qt5 migration pain that I was bound to face eventually, but it would be really nice to have a warning about this, and a guide.

It broke because of missing dependencies? Does it need the package manifest patched?

Eek toxo.

Scientists have a new theory to explain how "toxo"—a cat-born parasite—can infect humans and control their brains.

I went on my first run that wasn't for the purpose of "oh crap I'm going to miss the bus" type reasons in years. I apparently made it 1.3 miles. I'm overweight, but seem to have some strength, and endurance.

A few weeks ago I rode a century, which is kind of a big deal. But I honestly don't know if I could run over a mile as I am now. Running is hard. And, I kind of think, not that fun.

The Linux kernel development process could use some improvement.

'If you tread on someone's toes, and they tell you to get off, then get off their toes. Don't tell them to "ask nicely".'

And that's all I will comment about the PyCon incident:

http://butyoureagirl.com/14015/forking-and-dongle-jokes-dont-belong-at-tech-conferences/

The TLDR version of my comments:

Instead of bickering about whether the crass jokes justified a public name-and-shame, the conversations should move on to things like "How do we make people feel safe reporting violations of the code of conduct privately to organizers?"  This is why I posted the tone link.  We need to move away from the tone argument and look into the roots of these issues.  We need to work on how to improve our communities and conferences so incidents like this don't happen again.

Justice department caught in a lie.

I haven't bothered to mention the whole sad Aaron Swartz saga, because it's been covered elsewhere.

But having the involved US attorney then basically lie about it all in a very public statement is something that I find particularly offensive. Compare these two statements - one from July 2011, one from yesterday, and tell me Carmen Ortiz isn't lying..

Yesterday (as reported by the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere):

"At no time did this office ever seek – or ever tell Mr. Swartz’s attorneys that it intended to seek – maximum penalties under the law."

And July 2011 (as posted by justice.gov itself):

"SWARTZ faces up to 35 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and a fine of up to $1 million"

Maybe that official and very public PR thing wasn't "telling Mr. Swartz’s attorneys", right?  Because in private, Ms Ortiz was probably talking about how she wanted to pay Aaron for his services, and just hug him. Right?  Anybody?

Ms Ortiz, just admit you were an ass-hat, and apologize. Instead of this kind of crap. Weasel-wording and misleading about your actions is not making your office look any better.

Here are the sources, so that people can compare them for themselves.

(Post edited: it's 2013 now, so "July 2011" isn't "last July". Oops.)

This actually makes a ton of sense from an evolutionary standpoint.

I hang out in coffee shops trying to learn whatever I can teach myself.  Usually technology.  I get distracted by people I meet, and social networking though, so sometimes I don't get much done. On the evenings, and weekends I'm usually very busy.
