Positives: STAFF: helpful and excellent staff (all 2 of them), who were very accommodating with the Groupon and didn't mind that we were late for our reservation. They seem to be bearing up well under their clearly rather strained situation, despite all 5 other tables in the restaurant (plus ours) eventually whipping out Groupons. No groans were heard, despite some reviews to the contrary, and I was impressed with their pleasantness and helpfulness. Negatives: MENU/PRICE: French name (suggesting a French restaurant), but a mishmash Tuscan/French/old American steakhouse menu with no prix fixe and no real apparent sense of direction or specialization. The restaurant's titular dish (Chicken La Serre) is actually a chicken marsala variant. The prices were full-bore upscale ($$$ out of 4): my entree was $30 and my wife's was $24. FOOD: Unfortunately the food's quality did not bear up to the prices, largely (I suspect) to a loss (or lack) of direction in the kitchen; my bouillabaisse had the correct ingredients and was cooked well, but was badly underseasoned, watery (not brothy), and served without so much as a single crouton or piece of bread. The odor of saffron was also undetectable, a cardinal sin in bouillabaisse. Absolutely not a $30 dish, I am sorry to say, and frankly not even really worth the Groupon price. My wife got the Chicken Limolene, which she apparently liked fairly well, but when pressed admitted that she liked the $12 version at Olive Garden just as much. DECOR/ATMOSPHERE: The confusion about this place's identity also came out in the decor. The steakhouse-style leather seats, rich wood paneling and antique brass fixtures which could have seemed classy and upscale in the right context seemed sinister and dated in the overly dim, intimate lighting; coupled with the nearly empty house (on a weekend night) and the truly inexplicable free-jazz trumpet solo that was playing through the tinny loudspeakers overhead, the illusion of a mad funeral parlor (as my wife put it) was nearly complete and rather unsettling. TAKEAWAY: I wish this place well, and the staff are delightful, but La Serre is clearly past its prime in a lot of ways and is suffering an identity crisis. I wish them the best and would gladly try them again (at full price) if they made some changes.

THE MOST DISAPPOINTING "Fine Dining" restaurant I have ever been to. I had heard so much for so many years about LaSerre in Albany and how incredible it is. If yo are going there... don't go with high expectations! You will be let down, severely! It started right from the "Hostess" seating us. She seemed disturbed by our presence and bothered that she had to seat another couple. We were almost immediately served a glass of water... I guess that was to make sure we were satisfied for at least 20 minutes while we waited for our very confused and aggravated server. At least 10 more minutes and finally. we have drinks...but wait... we also got rolls that were rubbery because they were heated too long in the microwave. The table across from us got salad and the waitress (a different one) happily offered them crushed black pepper on the salad... HHHmmm,,, a bit curious why it was offered to them but not us. We then did not see our server to offer another drink or ask if everything was ok. 15 minutes later... someone else puts our plates down with food that look good but had little to no flavor whatsoever. My companion had the "signature" chicken dish that was incredibly bland!!!! Still never offered a second drink... the waitress strolled by the table and asked in passing, and by in passing, i mean did not stop to ask if our meals were good. Surprise, surprise... no offer for coffee and no offer for dessert... REALLY "Fine Dining"... I can't even imagine this place to be fine dining on it's BEST day. Maybe years ago it was... it is terribly outdated... Men's room was dirty and I wasted a night with a date on a horrible restaurant that we still can't believe. DID NOT leave a gratuity... got a phone call from Management an hour later to let me know I didn't leave a tip... REALLY??? Why would I leave a tip??? Manager told me she would send a certificate to me so we could come back and try it again... almost 2 moths have passed and still waitng for that coupon??? If I were rating on a scale of 1-5 I would give the food a 1 and the service a -25 (i'm being nice) To LaSerre if yo happen to read this... YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED that anyone would ever write such horrible things about your restaurant and iin attempts to make correction... your management didn't even follow through. TSK TSK TSK!!! A Happy Meal would have been more satisfying!!!!

Set us up for a wonderful experience. Good ambiance. But our med rare filets came well done and covered in gravy. Sent them back and then we were punished with completely raw steaks. At least we can fix these at home

Restaurant Wk Oct. 2011 - was only OK, not great. 1st my reservation was all wrong, they had us down for party of 2, not 4 so we were then put into a side room off the bar where you could tell they were putting walk-ins in… and the hostess was our waitress & she was friendly. Food was good. Appetizer was the salad with a fried goat cheese ball. Then chicken stuffed with goat cheese w/ a sauce. another guest got the tilapia crusted with pistachio, & another got the Autumn fettuccine. The red velvet cake for dessert was tasty & the other choice of was a turtle cheesecake- you could tell it was a frozen brand and not baked fresh. 1 glass of shiraz & that was $8. I don’t foresee myself going back any time soon.

Had seen several pretty negative reviews from Groupon customers, but I have to say, our experience there was excellent. The staff was friendly and polite (in spite of being very busy with a very large holiday party). We had no issue whatsoever with our Groupon deal. The food was delicious and the atmosphere is lovely. Dessert was extra delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. No complaints at all!!

La Serre has been a favorite of ours for years. It never disappoints. Recently my wife and went to celebrate a special day for us and had another fantastic dining experience. We started by sharing the beef carpacio and escargot. I mean how can you go to La Serre and not have the escargot? Always a treat! Both plates were delicious. For our entrees I had the stuffed portabella mushroom and my wife the salmon with tortilla crust. My portabella was great. My wife is a salmon lover and has tried it many ways but said this was the best she has had. Generally I'm not much for salmon but given her review I had to try to it. It was so good that I have already decided to oreder it myself on our next visit. For dessert we had the creme brulee. A classic dessert always done superbly at LaSerre. The atmosphere at LaSerre is inviting, elegant yet cozy and non- pretentious. The service is always impeccable. As you can see we love the place and are already planning our next visit!

Here's my experience: When I was first seated, the waiter brought out some stale (day old at least) bread and some plates. She then came back with some dipping oil, which made the bread slightly more palatable, but took away the plates. Kind of hard to eat bread and dipping oil with NO PLATES. Then my order arrived: I had ordered fish, which was prepared dry and tasteless (not to mention overpriced), and accompanied by some limp, reheated vegetables. By this time, I needed a water refill, but my waitor was nowhere to be seen. For twenty minutes. I had to walk to the bar for more water. The cherry on top really was the ladies restroom, though. It looked as though it had not been updated since 1986 (teal and peach-colored fixtures!), and was dark, which is probably meant to conceal the dirt since it looked as though it hadn't been cleaned thoroughly in the meantime, either. Perhaps I caught them on an off-day, as most other peoples' reviews are good, and I have to wonder if we're talking about the same place. We are; I work down the street, and had made a point of trying La Serre since it looked so nice from the outside. The niceness stops there, however.

I went to La Serre to celebrate my sister finding a job after her graduation, the atmosphere looked beautiful, reminiscent of Old New York, and the enjoyment stopped there. The food was the worst I've had on a night out, my family and I took only one bite of our entrees and then asked for the bill. Everything tasted like it was old and rotting, the roasted potatoes tasted like the oil was burned and had been reused. I had to down my entire gin and soda just to get the taste out of my mouth. They got my mother's salad order incorrect because it was incorrectly written on their menu, and they initially accused her of ordering the bland thing they'd placed before her and not the dish with bleu cheese and poached pears. Of course, when they finally admitted that they had made the mistake and she received her salad, there was no dressing and it just didn't taste good. My sister asked for a simple cranberry vodka, she received one with no cranberry in it. I had the special, pasta with saffron sauce and bits of salmon - it was like it was laced with garbage. After all of that, we just wanted to get out of there and not make a scene so we asked for our bill, of course the prices were exorbitant but we just paid it and darted out of there like a bat out of a rotten fish-infested hell.
