Have you ever heard of a Maned Wolf? This South American beauty is called a wolf and resembles a 3 foot tall fox, but is actually distinct from both, the only living species of the genus Chrysocyon. It roams forests, marshes and open spaces in Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay eating whatever small prey or tasty vegetation it can locate. Though monogamous, this canid definitely lives up to the title of lone wolf. Mating pairs may mutually defend a territory, but hunt alone and rarely meet outside mating season. They are at risk to habitat loss and also human hunting for body parts (especially the eyes), considered locally to have magical powers.
