When a reputable-sounding nonprofit organization released a report attacking the organic food industry in April 2014, the group went to great lengths to tout its independence. What was not mentioned in the report, the news release or on the website: Executives for Monsanto Co., the world’s leading purveyor of agrichemicals and genetically engineered seeds, along with key Monsanto allies, engaged in fund raising for Academics Review, collaborated on strategy and even discussed plans to hide industry funding, according to emails obtained by U.S. Right to Know via state Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. http://ow.ly/Yint30244ZZ

Landmark Organic Farming Tax Credit Becomes Law in Hawaii: Act 258

The state of Hawaii has announced Act 258, (HB 1689 CD1), a new law that will
allocate $2,000,000 in state-funded tax credits to certified organic food production
in the state. The state-funded tax credit is the first of its kind in the U.S. and is
designed to complement existing federal programs that help organic farmers
overcome the financial obstacles of the certification process. Is your state
considering state-funded tax credits that encourage and assist in the transition to
organic?

Consumer interest in healthy grains could sow the seeds for some long-forgotten bread wheats to make a comeback, according to an opinion article released Monday in Trends in Plant Science — presumably the Vogue of botany. http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/06/27/483278049/nothing-says-hip-like-ancient-wheat
Many consumers in North America and Europe are willing to pay a premium for nutritious, organic grains. That makes the market ripe for a revival of millennia-old bread wheat, some plant breeders say.

Cherry Orchard, 2005. EDEN Montmorency Tart Cherries are Great Lakes environ fruit, enjoying a seasonal lake effect. Almost a decade ago six families in this region asked Eden to help them convert their orchards to organic. These original orchards have now been managed organically for nine years, and more orchards have been converted to organic each year. The healthy trees and soil in these orchards produce the most delicious cherries we have ever tasted.

By Kendra Klein and Kari HamerschlagForty five years have passed since Earl Butz, then U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, asserted, "Before we go back to organic agriculture in this country, somebody must decide which 50 million Americans we are going to let starve or go hungry." Time has proven Butz ve...
