What is Project H.O.O.D. Helping Others Obtain Destiny?

 http://www.livestream.com/nbctvchicago/video?clipId=flv_0de0bfe7-8585-40dc-ae1a-29b3c3930657

Pastor Corey B. Brooks promised a grieving mother, Kim Hopkins that it would be safe to have her son’s funeral at New Beginnings Church of Chicago. Her son, Carlton “TuTu” Archer was shot and killed by gangs. His parents, Daryl and Kimberly Hopkins were afraid to have the funeral at the church because of more gang violence. During the funeral service shots were fired outside the church. Pastor Brooks felt that he was not able to keep his word to the parents.

He declared, “I’d rather sleep outside in a tent than to see crime, drugs, violence and unemployment take over our community.” On November 22, 2011 Pastor Corey B. Brooks began camping in a tent on the rooftop of a vacant motel across the street from his church. The church led an operation shutdown campaign on this motel to rid the community of drugs, pimps, and prostitutes. Now Pastor Corey B. Brooks’ vision is to tear down the motel and build a community center in its place. The purchase price of the motel is $450,000 which is the fundraising goal of Project H.O.O.D.

Project H.O.O.D Helping Others Obtain Destiny (www.projecthood.org) will create community development, housing, employment, economic empowerment, and social services through the community center in Woodlawn.  Pastor Corey B. Brooks and New Beginnings Church Chicago are creating a community center that will be a safe place for the youth of the Woodlawn. It also will include retail stores, restaurants on the lower level and mixed housing on the upper floors.

Excerpt from Pastor Corey B. Brooks' Blog:

OCCUPY KING DRIVE - A Pastor's view from the ROOF-Part 1 Day 4

By Pastor Corey Brooks, November 26, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Since this is my first blog, let me introduce myself, my name is Pastor Corey Brooks, and I pastor New Beginnings Church of Chicago, located at 6620 S Martin Luther King Dr.

It is amazing what you can see when you rise above adversity; and since I am living in a tent on the top of a roof, I can see and can no longer be quiet!  From the words of Tupac Shakur, "If God wanted me to be quiet, He would have never, showed me what He does."

That is why I am screaming from the rooftop of an abandoned motel for action.  Many people have asked me, 'why am I on the roof?'  Well, there are many reasons, but the 10 most important reasons are dead, buried 6 feet underground - teenagers, with names and families whose funerals I did this past summer!

I am here because I can no longer sit on my apathy and continue to watch our young men and women gunned down, victims of violence and their families being left with grief, heartache and disappointments.

We have an opportunity to change a community by creating jobs and saving the lives of many young children and teens by acquiring and developing this abandoned motel right across the street from my church.  However, we desperately need HELP!

We have 21 days to purchase the motel through Project HOOD™ An initiative for economic revitalization - Helping Others Obtain Destiny.  In 2009, this motel was shut down by our church and the city of Chicago for being a place known for harboring drug dealers, addicts, drunkards, and prostitution. This was GREAT!  However, shutting down the motel was not enough… we need to offer something better.

I will not come down off this roof until we can acquire this building and take responsibility for our own future.  This is a humanitarian effort that requires caring humans.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best, "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."

That's why I am on the roof!
