This is the start of what will be the Uglydoll section at the Virgin Red Box Stores in Dubai, where Virgin ( Megastore to us ) is the place to go. It's a beautiful shop and I was truly humbled when they came to us out of the blue this last February at Toy Fair.
I show you this to prove that you can absolutely do whatever it is you know you love to do. That is, as long as you are doing what you love.
Because if I was able to do this, you'll have zero problem doing yours.
This Uglydoll section in Dubai should not be there.
Technically I should not be where I am now either, sitting by the window
looking at the line of a zillion people down there waiting to get into Comic-Con,
getting ready to do signings at our booth and go meet our fantastic fans, customers, and partners. 15 years ago, I did not know one iota of the lingo. I didn't know what palletized meant, or what an MOQ was or what in the world a freight forwarder was.
That level of feeling like you don't know the very world you want to inhabit is enough to scare away anyone.
I'm telling you right now, you have nothing to fear.
I am still looking up definitions of terms under the table at meetings with my phone.
It's all here on the big old internet waiting for you to find it, between the UFO sites and celebrity gossip pages, which serve as the detours to creativity.
Unless what you love to do truly is related to hollywood rumors or UFOlogy, then yes, go absorb that until your eyes have turned completely around!
Next step, get those preconceived notions out of your head.
That sharp business woman with the perfect suit and corporate confidence
still gets sweaty palms before the big presentation, and she's been at it for decades.
That millionaire businessman?
Unless he's living like he makes 40k, he's no millionaire
and needs that next gig just as bad as the next guy.
If you're a millionaire, you get to live like you make 40k...you just worry less.
If you make a billion, THEN you get to live like you make a million.
My flight attentant friend always tells me how some folks in first class are so cheap.
I always reply "Good! They better be!"
But that's for my next rant.
They say it's who you know.
You'll hear "It's who you know." until you're 104 years old.
Yes yes, that's great. But I know a lot of talented folks who
know everyone, and everyone knows how talented they are
and wonders why in the world they don't do what we all know
they should be doing, what they LOVE to do.
Who you know and what you know comes when you make that inner
decision to simply start and never look back.
The truth is, I have NO idea how to get toys passed inspection for Dubai.
We have a rare few hard working talented people at HQ handling that monster, and all I had to do was sign the papers for the notary. But I only have those incredible people in my life because I faced that fear of the unknown ten years ago and cut right through it.
Before you let your screen know how very cheesy that sounds, know having to face the unknown never goes away, and it's scary as hell every single day, no matter what level you reach in your own pursuit.
It can all turn on you and simply go away at a moments notice, which is far less scary when you're single living on your sister's floor than it is when you have kids in school and people you love who count on you, and especially lovely employees and friends who eat because you're doing what you love. Look at the recent disappearance of the giant book sellers.
My pal Gary Baseman told me "You never arrive, it's a hustle from day one, every day." and he is 100% right.
That fear of failure is simply the incorrect interpretation of the energy of opportunity.
Grab on and go for it.
Don't know how?
I am looking up Dubai toy safety requirements right now.
