... "Westchester County is home to an entire community of these homes, which is actually called “Usonia.”

I have stayed at the Usonian Inn twice. back in 2005 it was slightly run down but still had the feel of a 1950s Usonian Motel. Back then we rented a room on the week day for $50. Recently, under new management, the place has had some remodeling - new bathrooms, furniture, paint and windows. Also, the prices have gone up substantially. The new owners have also made changes to the lobby. A built-in cappuccino machine, and wine for sale. The service was friendly but a tad unprofessional. We were greeted a pleasantly woman sitting outside with a boom box blasting out music which I expected her to turn down as we checked in. I had made reservations, but that didn't seem to have made checking in any smoother. We were given a double room after requesting a single and after inquiring further, she finally gave us a single after hesitating a bit.(?). The woman shared her frustrations about running the place - remodeling issues, hot water problems and web page problems - but as guests do we really need to hear all that? She was in the process of setting up a "yard sale" at the motel. My impression is that the new owners were more interested in making a buck by attracting more upscale visitors rather than extending the legacy of the Usonian concept. The remodeling efforts, although commendable, were not in the spirit of Usonian design or philosophy. This is unfortunate because this is a historic building and a lot is lost by altering it simply to modernization and repair. It seems that guests would be largely architecture enthusiasts and would respond favorably to restoration rather than a little wine, machine espresso and leather couches. The Usonian Inn could have much more potential as an compliment to Taliesin and House on the Rock if the owners were more knowledgeable and cared about architecture. All in all, we had a nice stay, but as a FLW enthusiast I remain somewhat disappointed.
