So what is networking then? It’s every human interaction. And all those small, mundane, daily actions are opportunities to make a stronger connection.

#BYDN and learn to love those little networking acts. http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=c0eaad85c7353d43277950b62&id=dd429d7139&e=1a532d66c6

In my mind, networking occurs EVERY time you interact or have the chance or possibility of connecting with someone else. From where you sit in a co-working space to the meetup you decide to attend to who you decide to text, tag or retweet – it’s all human interactions (and the opportunity to further a relationship). #BYDN Read more in my latest newsletter: http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=c0eaad85c7353d43277950b62&id=63aae5cd6c&e=[UNIQID]

#BYDN: How does social media fit into your assessment of potential candidates? What do you look for? What are red flags? Is the absence of a digital footprint a problem? If so, why?

Amanda: Recruiters are fact checkers. A big red flag is a LinkedIn profile that doesn’t match a corporate online bio or the CV that is attached a potential candidate’s e-mail. We work to place candidates in the right job, so Twitter feeds that consist only of automated content tweeted from your RSS feed (and no interaction with humans using Twitter) is poor signaling. Another note on the human element is to avoid sending generic LinkedIn invitations to people you haven’t met. Taking a minute to tell me why you want to connect with me and how I can help you makes all the difference. And, yes, the absence of a digital footprint needs to be ex- plained. My first reaction is the person is hiding something! Most people, even those in regulated industries, are on at least one social networking site today.

Whether someone chooses to buy your product or service may come down to how you network your FAQs....Any guides or resources you draw up in the process are direct proof of your knowledge base and communication skills–and in one sense, of your networking prowess. Just like good dinner conversation, all of these resources should guide and engage, leaving the inquirer better informed and, hopefully, impressed by your expertise. #BYDN

Q: What is the best way to gracefully exit a conversation?

Me: Be polite. There’s not one answer given the endless number of difficult, awkward, dull and uncomfortable situations we can find ourselves in. By being polite, you can walk away staying true to your values.

2015 was my year of NO. It was NO so I could say YES to writing my first book. But being proactively No has not always been the right professional choice. Saying No at other points in my career would have been an absolute career-killer. #BYDN
