In South Williamsburg since 2006, Glasslands is a converted warehouse, formerly a homegrown community art space turned psychedelic venue partyhaus. Bring your friend, see the bands, try our beer, make out in the photobooth.

I'm torn on whether or not Glasslands really deserves the fourth star I'm going to give it. On one hand, it's a rather cool music venue. It wins hands down for the most unique light show I've ever seen, which is worth the trip/cover to see alone. That plus the sound is great in there for the most part. It's also a pretty intimate venue, which is great for catching bands you like. Plenty of dancing room too, and a balcony area. What's not to love? Drinks are overpriced, especially for a place that looks as divey. A Modello is $6... Dark and Stormy will run you $10 after a dollar tip. There isn't really anywhere to sit - I know it's a music venue, but still. And I'd advise against walking to/from the place at night, it's in one of the sketchier areas of Williamsburg, and is a walk from the nearest L train stop. Catch a cab. If you have a chance to catch a band you like here, do it! You'll have a great time. Just pregame first.

UPDATED: Glasslands recently got rid of its famous cotton clouds surrounding its stage, which takes away a lot of the ambiance that I loved about this place. On the plus side, a much-needed renovation of their bathrooms has been completed. I'll still miss the old atmosphere (ain't no sunshine when the clouds are gone!) but this is still one of the best intimate concert venues in New York. I love this place! It's like something out of a dream, or like a bunch of sets from a school play got smashed together to form a concert venue. But I love the dark, starry night atmosphere. I don't love that this place has no air conditioning. I'd come here for a dance party and leave looking like I got caught in the rain, it was so hot. But the quirkiness of this place makes up for it and I've discovered a lot of awesome bands here.

Nice DIY venue - only other place I have experience with in this area is DbA though. Didn't start off so great - I got there an hour before the time on the flyer, and it turns out that's the door time, not the start time, so I ended up having to leave, wander around the area for an hour, and come back. Oh well, live and learn. Came back in at 8:30, picked up my will-call tickets with no problems. They stamp your hand so you can go in and out, bouncer enforced. The bar was pretty nice, There was Rolling Rock (I guess PBR is passe now) and Brooklyn Lager, and three on-tap beers were also available - Stella, Goose Island IPA, and Hoegaarden. They had a nice selection of mixed drinks as well - my girlfriend liked the "Tequila Mockingbird". Bathrooms are actually not bad for a DIY venue - unisex, three toilets, one urinal crammed into a small space. They were clean, or at least they were at the start of the night. Doors for privacy. You'll find the bathroom up the stairs behind the bar. The stage is nice, with some sort of paper mache construction coming down from the ceiling, and a projector for light effects. Stage is elevated about 4 feet, so easy to see who's on stage from the back or side of the venue. Sound is OK, no complaints. They do their best with the equipment they have. Overall a good experience, I would come back here again!

I walked outside with a drink in my hand... I know thats wrong... but does that mean the bouncer can attack me and throw me into a car ? I didnt say ANYTHING to him, he didnt say anything to me. He just threw me into a car.... THEN I quickly leave with my girlfriend. We go a block and a half away. The bouncer comes a few minutes later and accuses me of spilling my drink on him (after he threw me into a car while I was holding a drink, its somehow my fault he got wet? ) So... he keeps coming, and then he calls his partner, and his partner gets out of a car. And im walking back and im thinking im going to get jumped because they keep advancing on me, so I desperatly pull out a bottle to defend myself. All the while walking backwords trying to talk to them saying I dont want trouble. So I get attacked by 2 huge bouncers, and they break my coat and knock me down and sprained my ankle and hit me at the back of the head. Why? Because I had a drink in my hand ? not right. Plus this happened like 400 feet from the club, thats far away... It would be nice if the venue paid the repair bill for my coat = $35.00 plus the 5$ entry fee = $40.00 . PS, the Security guy in the car did not seem like a bad guy, but the one at the door... how do you attack someone for having a drink in their hand ? You need a new profession where you cant justifiably attack people in anger. Be careful if you go to this venue, I never will again, neither will my friends or my band.

A relaxed music venue in Williamsburg. Kinda a bit away from the calamity on Bedford Avenue, but not bad, especially since Kent Ave has a giant bike lane. Acoustics are a bit off, since it used to be a warehouse, but it is always packed on a weekend night, and some weekdays. Full calendar of events, and decent decor and environment/crowd.
