Success of Blood Test for Validation of Autism Confirmed
========================================================
A #predictivebloodtest for identifying autism on the basis of a #bigdatatechnique which takes into account 24 #metabolites implicated in the #transsulfurationpathway and the #methioninecycle has been validated, and has identified #autismspectrumdisorders with 88% accuracy.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/clinical-investigation-archive.html

Pioneering Gene Therapy Reverses Type 2 Diabetes in Mice
====================================================
Gene therapy using #adenoassociatedvirus carrying the gene for the Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) has completely #reversedtype2diabetesandobesity in the mouse model. This approach genetically manipulated the liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue to keep producing FGF21, a crucial protein for #correctingtheenergymetabolism. Upon inducing FGF21 production, the animals exhibited #decreasedinsulinresistance and #lossofweight.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

Metformin can Reverse Lung Fibrosis
========================================================
Researchers have demonstrated for the first time that drug treatments such as #Metformin, which target #cellmetabolism can be used to reverse #establishedlungfibrosis in #mousemodels. This finding is important as the pathological mechanisms underlying #persistentfibrosis as well as the effective treatment interventions for the condition are lacking.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

Studies and Surveys Implicate Potential Iatrogenic Harm of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Graded Exercise Therapy for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients.
=========================================================
#Cognitivebehavorialtherapy (CBT) and graded exercise therapy (GET) are declared to be effective and safe therapies for #Myalgicencephalomyelitis (ME) and #chronicfatiguesyndrome (CFS). Medical policies in various countries, e.g. the UK and the Netherlands, recommend CBT and GET as evidence-based treatments. But studies and patient surveys in several countries indicate that CBT often has no effect at all and that GET has detrimental effects in a large subgroup of patients.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/articles/studies-and-surveys-implicate-potential-iatrogenic-harm-of-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-and-graded-exercise-therapy-for-myalgic-en-12190.html

Immunotherapy for Type-1 Diabetes
========================================================
Type-1 Diabetes (T1D) is an #autoimmunedisorder in which the body's #immunesystem mistakenly attacks the #insulinproducingbetacells, thereby making #insulinsupplementation a necessity. A small clinical trial demonstrated that #peptideimmunotherapy can be safely used for treating people with #type1diabetes. Furthermore, the results also revealed that immunotherapy helps steady the #insulinproduction in individuals newly diagnosed with T1D.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

Injectable Hydrogel Repairs Brain following Stroke
====================================================
In a breakthrough study, scientists have #regrownbrains of mice following #stroke using an engineered #VEGFcontaininghydrogel biomaterial. This hydrogel when injected into the mouse brain stimulates #angiogenesis and suppresses #inflammation. It was found that after 16 weeks of injection, the #strokecavities had #rejuvenatedbraintissue and fully functioning #neuralnetworks. These mice with new neural networks exhibited improved #motorbehavior- a never before seen result.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/journal-of-experimental-stroke-translational-medicine-archive.html

A Swiss Army Knife Approach to Delivering Oral Insulin
====================================================
Insulin is rarely delivered through the oral mode as it does not fare well in the acidic environment of the stomach and is poorly absorbed outside the intestine. A new approach of #oralinsulindelivery has been developed in which insulin is enclosed within choline and geranic acid and the formulation is packed inside a capsule containing an #acidresistantentericcoating. This formulation is biocompatible, and can be stored for up to two months at room temperature.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

Four New Interventions in Development that can Change the Diabetes Landscape
=====================================================
Four new #antidiabeticdrugs, currently under development can change the trajectory of #diabetestreatment. (1) #NovoNordisk has completed a phase-3 clinical trial of an #oralGLP1 #Semaglutide that could help delay the requirement for #directinsulintreatment. (2) #Opko #Oxyntomodulin (OPK-88003) is a new class of #dualGLP1andglucagonreceptoragonistdrugs. (3) #Oramed has just started a Phase 2 clinical trial on an #oralinsulin drug, and (4) #IntarciaTherapeutics #ITCA650 is a unique #subdermalimplant that provides a continuous delivery of #exenatide, whenever it is inserted (once in every 6 months).@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

Diabetes and Epigenetics
======================================================
It was initially thought that reduced production of insulin by the #pancreas in diabetes results from the death of the pancreatic beta cells. However, there has been a shift in that theory, now it is increasingly being recognized that in #diabetes instead of dying the beta cells undergo #dedifferentiation to produce progenitor cells that lack the ability to secret insulin. This de differentiation is brought about by two sets of epigenetic modifications: (1) ectopic activation of bivalent domains silenced by the Polycomb group of proteins and (2) loss of expression of lineage-defining genes.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html

A No Injection Treatment for Diabetes
=======================================================
Insulin injections have been a fact of life in individuals suffering from #neonataldiabetes. But a new study has revealed tablets to be just as effective. This study spread over a duration of 10 years, found that substituting the #insulininjections with #sulphonylureatablets could also do an excellent job of #controllingbloodsugar over the long-term. This is great news for many patients suffering from diabetes, who have switched over from insulin.@ http://www.openaccessjournals.com/journals/diabetes-management-archive.html
