A study from the University of Michigan reports that use of hearing aids may reduce hospital visits. http://ihpi.umich.edu/news/hearing-aids-linked-fewer-hospital-er-visits-older-adults

Part of the summary discusses the cost of hearing aids; in a bundled model UM estimates the cost between $2000 and $7000. As a clinician, I wonder the average cost of a hospital visit; is it more or less than $2000-$7000 and what is the cost over a 4-year period- the average literature life of hearing aids.

Is the cost of hearing aids worth the reduced cost of hospital visits? What other benefits could treating hearing loss have? How long until audiologists are recognized by all insurances as providers?

Maybe time will tell.

When Dr. Spoor was a student at Gallaudet University, she had the pleasure of meeting Justin Osmond a few times, as Mr. Osmond was/is active in the hearing loss community (at that time, with Starkey Hearing).

Doug Beck from The Hearing Review recently spoke to Mr. Osmond about his hearing loss, his recent TED talk, and opportunities presented during his life.

Shari Eberts always has interesting articles and this month's feature in The Hearing Journal is no exception.

While, I am not a fan of yoga- I prefer high intensity, take-my-mind-off-of-things workouts- her recommendations relate to enjoying yoga with hearing loss.

After reading her suggestions, find a local yoga class to relax and enjoy the workout.

What goes in your body can affect more than just your weight. A healthy diet may lower your risk for hearing loss.

Monitor what you eat, use hearing protection around loud noise, and ensure you follow recommended hearing evaluation recommendations- once every 10 years from adulthood until age 50, then as recommended by your audiologist.

Yesterday, the featured post related to newborn hearing screening and the role of Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs).

Today's focus is looking at OAEs in a new way: what additional information can be obtained, what research will show about the relationship between the middle ear and the auditory nerves, and what will come in the next 40 years.

Since 2000, all newborns have their hearing screened before being discharged from the hospital. How is that completed? Otoacoustic Emissions!

Want to know more about how OAEs work, why the test is used in the newborn population, and much more? Read more at ENT & Audiology News.
