Snowflake-a-Day #5

Symmetry in snowflake is not as common as you might think. This crystal shows fairly consistent symmetry across all the branches, but when you view large and zoom in, there are many unique features on each branch.

Snowflakes are never as perfect as the ones you see in advertisements and decorations. This is because there is absolutely nothing that links the growth of the branches together. They grow in similar patterns and shapes only because the environmental variables are nearly identical. Even slight changes from one edge of a snowflake to another can cause differences to occur.

As differences in the branches begin to appear, the aerodynamic property of the snowflake can be altered which will also affect the growth. When I spot a symmetrical snowflake, I usually go out of my way to photograph it - they're beautiful gems of the sky and the proverbial "diamond in the rough".
