I haven't blogged in a while.  After two years of drought it was too hard to get motivated to do a blog.  The prospects for the coming year aren't a lot better, but we have gotten six inches of wet snow a week ago that measured about 0.60".  Right now the c...

This dam has had water that is undrinkable since way last summer. Now it is finally drying up. Most of our dams and dugouts look like this. If it wasn't for piped water we would have none.

With the drought of 2017 getting in full swing, we were out testing water for TDS (total dissolvable solids). A dam/dugout we knew would be high in TDS we tested and it was 9930. A dugout that is usually good tested at 220 TDS.
We tested where the sheep drink in the creek, it tested 4150 TDS. Where the cows were drinking tested at 3720. TDS.
If the number gets above 5000 TDS problems in poor performance especially in young livestock start happening. If the problem is too much sulfate in the water which is our case, young animals develope polio encephalitis which causes blindness and or death.

If you can stay below the 5000 it cuts back on water consumption causing poor performance. Normally this all occurs later in the summer, but with two drought years in a row the problems came earlier. We are starting to move to well water. We have to continue to monitor water quality.
