I think words are pretty awesome. And powerful.

Yet, I’ve furred my brow in many a marketing meeting where some combination of design and copy were presented, wondering if I was the only one in the room that didn’t “get it”. Meaning, the copy on the website, ad, brochure, whatever, was so cutesy and cleaver that it flew over my head like the Blue Angels on the fourth of July.

Ask yourself these key questions before you start working with any client:

1) Do they have the same values that I’m looking to serve in my business? If your answer is “I don’t know” then you haven’t asked them enough questions.

2) Am I allowing them to hire me or am I just hoping they pick me? There’s a vast difference.

3) Have I made this person feel like there is a club they’d benefit from belonging to, if they manage to make it through our gatekeeper list of qualifications? If not, and if you’ve only talked with them about how you work and your pricing, you’re leaving out a very important point.

Many entrepreneurs don’t ask these questions. They do things the other way around, such as: I’ll let you interview a bunch of people like me, and I hope you’ll choose me! I’ll even offer you a discount if you sign today.
