In honor of the 5th Anniversary of the founding of Red Sun Classical Fencing, RSCF and the schools of the Classical Fencing Society will be holding a tournament on June 17th 2017 here in Albuquerque, New Mexico!

The tournament is open to all fencers 13 years of age or older. This year we will have 3 weapons brackets: Foil, Sabre, and Dueling Sword. Traditionally, the "Dueling Sword" bracket in CFS tournaments is more akin to a Historical bracket, in which different weapons are allowed to fight against one another: Rapier, Smarra, Smallsword, and Epee. Competitors may fence in any or all brackets.

There will be a get-together at Provost Mank's house the in evening after the tournament, and the sala will re-open at noon on Sunday June 18th for free fencing.

I know that some of you may be aware of this already, but for those of you who don't know, and because I feel it must be posted anyway:

On Thursday December 22nd, Dennis Graves, swordcutler extraordinaire, passed away at the age of 69. He was well known to nearly every fencing and theatrical community as one of the very best swordcutlers of our time. He was an artist by education and a skilled craftsman, and he managed to combine these two qualities to produce some of the finest pieces of functional art for these communities. Most classical fencers or HEMA practitioners have at least one of his pieces, some of which have been in use for many years, which is a testament to their quality.

He was a pleasure to speak to, to deal with, and to observe as he practiced his craft. He was a great resource of knowledge and skill, a friend to many of us, and he will be sorely missed by all of us.

October 31st marks the 4th Anniversary of the founding of Red Sun Classical Fencing. We started in 2012 in a small back room in the Open Gym with 1 student. Today we have had as many as 17 students and have been in our current space at Duke City Fencing for nearly 2 years as a result of an excellent business relationship with our host organization. RSCF members have gone on to win or place in tournaments across the country, train to become teachers within RSCF, assist in instruction at DCF, and also found Albuquerque's foremost HEMA club, Albuquerque Sword Labs. We have hosted respected masters and instructors in the classical fencing and HEMA community to deliver the highest quality of instruction at seminars covering a wide variety of topics to participants from across the country. Provost Mank is proud of what we have accomplished in just 4 short years, and look forward to what we can accomplish in the future. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of RSCF, especially its membership!
