Tonight I decided to start going through the CS Unplugged (http://www.csunplugged.com/) activities with my almost 6 year old daughter.  I started with the dot cutouts and showed her how to convert a binary to decimal using the cutouts.  Then after she became comfortable with that I made a quick mapping for the alphabet and printed a series of binary numbers that hid a secret message.  I then left the room and left her to her own devices, the first one she solved in 10 minutes.  The second one took a little bit longer because half way through she moved to the other side of the table that held the cutouts and her binaries came out backwards.  Once I got her straightened out, she was able to solve it.

Overall I'm pretty proud of my little girl.

So let me ask you techie's out there, is between 5 and 6 too young to start showing her the basics of how computers work?

So here I am with my ear buds in, listening to my class and my daughter comes over and asks to listen in, so I give her an ear bud. This was 20 minutes ago and she's still listening! I asked her if she wanted me to teach her HTML, do you think 4 is too young to learn web development?

I checked out my stream for the first time in a while and I'm quite surprised at the number of trolls and drama that have migrated to G+ ... slightly disappointed ...

A project that my daughter and I have been working on the past few weeks. I just spent the last few hours cleaning the pea gravel for the grow beds ... as you can see I didn't do a very good job! Hoping to transplant some of the seeds we started last week and then getting some fish for the tank this coming weekend!

Introduction
I have donned many hats over the years, but none have been more rewarding than that of a software engineer. Each day provides a new opportunity to solve a complex problem, improve upon a process, and create new, innovative tools. It is a unique feeling to see a product that I contributed to being used "in the wild."

My driving force is my family, I have a loving, understanding, and beautiful wife and two amazingly wonderful daughters that remind me every day of the reason that I go to work. I believe that it is important to maintain a health work/life balance, and strive to do so.
