OK, so there are a lot of questions here. As someone who puts together computer systems and networks for a living though the biggest question here seems to be twofold. Firstly, I understand why the entertainment system connects to the internet, but why does it allow people to connect to it from outside? Secondly, and more importantly, why is the entertainment system even able to communicate with the systems that control the engine and brakes?

I wonder if a hack on Chryslers web site would allow access to their internal financial and other systems? My guess is they have a rigorous system of firewalls and separation to protect those sensitive systems but the same standards aren't applied to their products.

This isn't just a criticism of Chrysler though. This is an example of what happens when you start connecting everything to each other without considering all the implications. In fact more and more things are becoming connected and we all have very little control over what those things do with their connections. You might think your internet router at home, or your ISP provides a handy firewall to protect you from internet nastiness, but consider that your smart TV is happily connected on the inside of those protections. What's it doing when you're not streaming catch-up TV from the internet?

They say a picture says a thousand words. A YouTube video must be worth rather more than that...

and our survey says... well actually it says something we probably all knew anyway but still, at least someone's attempted to prove it.

Changed a brake light bulb on my Toyota today. A simple task only requiring the dismantling of the entire boot!
