Thank you for doing this show, Russell & Johann - such an important topic that is so misunderstood. Thank you for setting the record straight so succinctly.

Now, while we're on the topic of the 'war on drugs' I want to try and call some attention to two Australian citizens on death row in Indonesia for the crime of drug trafficking. These two men - Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan - have been on death row for almost 10 years now, and are due to be executed in the very near future, although a date has not been officially set. They have both exhausted all of their appeals, and this appears to be the end of the line for them. Amnesty International has run campaigns on their behalf in the past, but is not doing so at present.

In light of what we understand about drug abuse and addiction, it seems clear to me that if these two men are to be held accountable, then the governments and societies that create the conditions for drug addiction are even more so. Why, then, in light of what we know about drug abuse and addiction do we continue to allow drug traffickers to be executed?

So, what I would like to ask, Russell, and perhaps Johann as well - is for you to dedicate an episode of the Trews to Myuran and Andrew - to bring some context to their case, and make a public appeal for clemency.

For further information, well, there are countless sources, but I'll refer you first to a piece I wrote myself (which includes links to a recent article by human rights lawyer, Sarah Joseph, on the legality - or illegality, rather, in international human rights law - of these pending executions, as well as letters I have written to my local MP and to Amnesty International, imploring them to do what they can to ensure clemency): http://theoverthinker.org/what-of-the-lives-not-yet-taken/.

I don't know what I can possibly do that I haven't already done to help save these two valuable lives. I am hoping that you will speak out, and that this may make some difference by drawing attention to the case, and encouraging others to also speak out and hold their leaders accountable for a crime against humanity that does not have to be carried out.

On Monday 26th January - Australia Day - I will become an Australian citizen myself, and I will make a point of speaking to the officials and media present at the ceremony about the valuable lives of Australian citizens about to be lost if nothing is done to reverse the decision. I don't believe that any state should have the power to decide whether, when, and how someone dies, as this is murder when committed by anyone other than the state. In my view it is also murder when the state commands it.

Thank you so much for your time, and your compassion.

Hi there Russell & co, Kari McGregor, editor of SHIFT magazine here (http://shift-magazine.org/). Our focus is on sustainability, and couched in the context of the 3 E's - energy, economy & environment. I just want to say I'm really impressed with today's Trews (I watch every show and am really pleased to see you engaging in grassroots activism in particular) because you touched on the twin issues of peak oil and catastrophic climate change.

The SHIFT magazine team would love to interview you, Russell, particularly with regard to how you see the possibilities for Revolution panning out in the context of peak oil and climate crisis, and whether you see yourself as taking an active role in a networked movement with this as its goal.

Note: It's probably also worth mentioning economic contraction as another powerful force, and one that will almost certainly require a more immediate kind of attention than either energy or the environment - which should hammer home how serious the issue is. My guess is Max has filled you in on much of what you need to know there (or at least I hope he has).

Anyhoo, I don't know how else to get in touch, but I am aware that you read (at least some of) the comments on the Trews, so if you do happen to stumble across this comment, please get in touch with me directly via the SHIFT magazine contact form: http://shift-magazine.org/contact/

P.S. who knew Alec Baldwin was so savvy, eh? He's shot to the top of my list of celebrities wot think ;-)
