The index is a weighted average of the prices of 160 products and services, with New York's figure set to 100 to provide a base for comparisons.
A mistake we make when presenting data is that we don't provide context. In this case I appreciated seeing the 10 years ago and 5 years ago. The visualization is simple enough to follow.
