a list on portraiture, of a rather ephemeral importance:

• it is fucking difficult.
• it is more exciting than difficult.
• be ready for disappointment from an imagined pose to actual result.
• ... repeatedly so.
• never swear off flash and/or lamps.
• latch on to people that allow experimentation, as they are few.
• the portraits will never surpass the connection made with the person.
• the people that can be properly photographed are never just about anyone.
• the Oscar Wilde quote** is mostly true
— latch on to those people that falsify it
• « Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend. »
— O.W. was right, to some degree.
• do a draft to see how things look,
but don't finalize until some months later.

I swore off flash,
now I am just intrigued by its use.
to do a capture-level "dodging" is nice,
to use it for harsh Black & White* is terribly intriguing:
it can lead to a transformation of the person,
and the photographer.
finally a cliché I can embrace fully.

not of the sitter »
