New page is up!

Also, for the rest of the semester there won't be any more Thursday extras posts. Too much school work and not enough time.

More old art! The original version of Eternity Complex had elves. The current version does not. Today's piece was made for an extra web page that was about elves from way back in the day. All of the different races had their own illustration and I'll likely show those illustrations in the coming weeks.

Instead of elves the current version of the story has tree-people hybrids which I've been calling arboreals. I got rid of the elves because after thinking about the way magic worked in the world of Eternity Complex and the way the races evolved, the inclusion of elves didn't make a bunch of sense. Each race evolved away from humans and towards physical characteristics that were advantageous to the type of magic they practiced.

The elves were intended to have nature linked abilities but other than green tints showed no physical traits with plants. Arboreals on the other hand, can grow bark on their bodies for protection and have leaves in place of hair. Arboreals share many more physical traits with plants but since they have not been properly introduced, I'll refrain from saying too much about them.

Just a reminder, I'll be out of town next week and so there won't be a Monday new page alert or a Thursday post.

This week's post on change puts Marie into the spot light. I'm not even sure where to begin...

According to the file I found, Marie's name was originally spelled Mari. Her family name of Aqua hasn't changed from the conception of her character but that's one of the few things that remained. As for the remaining similarities... she's still kind-of-sort-of a pirate and her eye color has remained the same.

Originally Marie was a side character who was intended to pop in and out of the story, just as Meg and Astor have been doing currently. She was a friendly pirate who helped the group out when she could because it was the right thing to do. She was just a regular human with no magical abilities. There wasn't a lot of depth to her character because I didn't make it far enough in the first run of EC for her to even come close to popping up.

Currently, Marie's an aquatian who starts off in a pirate like role because she's trying to get Enya's attention (she's done pirate-y things before but she's not actually a pirate). Marie cares a lot about her family and will do what ever it takes to help them. Additionally her personality was re-created to balance out the rest of the current party's traits (instead of being a bland friendly pirate). Marie is impulsive, cunning, and kind which means she tends to be fairly quick on her feet. The problem with that though is that she tends to act without a plan and that doesn't always work out so well.

As for character design, I didn't even reference anything about her old design when creating the new one. Until I started to look for material to use in this weeks post, I didn't even remember making an actual design for Marie for the first version of EC. The fact that their eye color is practically the same in both versions is more a testament to the fact that I've always tried to make eye color meaning full and what better color to denote closeness to the sea than a sea-foam-green/aquatic-blue color.

New page went up yesterday but I forgot to post about it here. I'll be out of town next week, so there won't be a Monday update notice or Thursday post the week of the 16th.

More old art from way back in the day. I remember being really happy with these two pictures when I first made them. And, they're still not that bad looking. I really have no clue what inspired the top picture, it was a random extra I made. The bottom picture is a panel right before running is shown. I think I use to be a bit more adventurous back in the day with using the environment to show action; I should try to do more with the environment on future pages.

Not sure if next Thursday's post will be a look back at the past or a preview of the future. It'll all depend on how much school work I have.

Back in November I posted a pencil version of the hand on the right. Today I'm posting the finished panel (plus the panel that comes before it).

I figured since I'm on a comparing old to new binge, I might as well go all the way back to the very first version of Eternity Complex that was online. The pictures on the left come all the way from 2006. The anime/manga influence was a lot stronger in my art back then.

While searching for some old images, I found a whole host of old stuff that would make great Thursday posts. Hopefully, once I get through my exams next week I'll be able to write more in depth about all the changes  that have taken place from then to now, like how at some point Fae's hair was fire engine red.

Manga, anime, and jrpgs were all huge influences when I was getting started. They still are to some extent, just not so much in the art department. The only thing I can think of for the art shift is that once I got to college my exposure to western media increased dramatically. But the art style change was never a deliberate decision, just something that happened organically with time.
