Turned out the stainless steel the exhaust is made of can be welded with an arc welder. Begged an offcut pipe from the local exhaust shop to fit inside the broken pipe and welded it at home. Not so easy to weld 1mm metal without burning a hole right thru it. If the 2mm inside pipe was not there it would have been impossible for me and the welder I have.

Ah. You needed to repair the inlet side of the muffler. I was referring to the exhaust exit. Perhaps what I mentioned sounded confusing, then. The mod I performed on mine did change the tone, but not louder. By removing the spark screen cylinder from inside the muffler, it eliminated the high pitched "pingy" sound. The lower throaty pitch it has now is easier on the ears.
It is nice to know you have a second skill to fall back on. :-) As long as there are cars, there will be muffler specialists.

Yesterday for the first time I cleaned the carburator of the motorcycle. After 100 000 km I was surprised at how little whare there was. It was dirty allmost black inside. Cleaned and fitted the bike seems to be happier.

I believe I was to busy picking up the bike to get it out of the road to take pictures. I should have plenty of witnesses who saw it, stared and drove of, accept for one biker who turned around and came to my aid. We chatted a bit while I checked the damage to the bike and my torn shoe.

During our school years we had to read Dutch books. I still love the sound of the language, can't speak it. Even today I like to read posts in Dutch. Some I understand...

What is the stock KLR 650 exhaust made of? Mine just broke in two. If it is mild steel I can weld it tonight. If it stainless steel I will have to leave early to find someone with a TIG welder.

Scott, I have seen that mod a few times popping up and have seen a few KLR's with it. For me it feels just a tad to noisy. I much rather prefer the quiet sound of the stock exhaust, that was why I desperately needed to get mine fixed.

I took the bike to a local exhaust specialist and they assured me it can be welded with a normal arc welder. (They don't work on Bike exhausts not even if I remove it for them) I begged for a off cut pipe to insert inside the pipe and welded it myself. It is not easy to weld 1mm steel but with the 2mm pipe insert it came out ok.

A later post of mine have some pictures of the final result.

All I can show are these pictures after the event. The bent crash bar and the scratches on the baggage rack. The dent in the ego cannot be shown nore the stif arm and sholder. I rode to work a lot slower than normal and a lot more aware of the dangers arround.
