I remember a Marvel film that was deep, introspective, and dealt with both the hero and villan's very personal issues. That movies was called "Hulk", and it was a piece of sh**.

I'd take Avengers Age of Ultron type of sequels any day over garbage films like the one previously mentioned.

Fleshing out comic book characters into film characters that seem genuine is hard.

I'll give you two examples of Marvel films where the director/writers failed miserably. 1) Hulk - no humor, very dramatic  2) The Fantastic Four (2006), clunky and immature.   Joss Whedon is able to give a mega blockbuster that has top quality action, great acting, and humor with great timing. What else can you ask for in a director for a film of this magnitude, with such a large cast. Bryan Singer has directed how many X-Men films, and how many of those films felt as entertaining as these two Avenger films. Sam Raimi did a great job with Spiderman 1,2, but he had less actors to deal with.

Whedon put it all out there, he did a good job considering the balls that he had to juggle. I'm sure Marvel/Feige didn't give Whedon complete free reign to do what he wanted in this film, considering the extremely high expectations set by the studio on this film he delivered. Although this film isn't perfect (there's a handful of summer blockbuster sequels that are) it's a great sequel all things considered.
