Control. Do we ever really have it?

We think we do. Then things don't go our way and we are sad, frustrated, or angry. Kinda silly, don't ya think? This is why we say that the illusion of control creates suffering.

The way to a more peaceful existence, then, is to surrender. This is not an act of giving up or becoming apathetic. It means to accept this moment just the way it is. When we stop resisting What Is, we make room for responding wisely to a situation rather than reacting habitually.

Does this sound difficult to you? Engaging in a stillness practice like meditation is SO helpful in cultivating this skill. Our meditation practice can become a learning laboratory where we carefully strengthen the mindfulness muscle every day so that even when we fall back into the illusion of control, we can come back to the present moment with less reactivity and more ease.
