Full flow engines: run all the fuel and oxidizer through the preburners that drive the fuel and oxidizer pumps. The advantage is that all that extra extra fuel or extra oxidizer in the preburner cools the preburner exhaust immensely. That saves quite a bit of wear and tear on the pump's turbine blades.

Seen on Facebook: "Only 10% of programmers get these questions right. Can you?"

WTF? Just guessing gives you a 25% chance. How can only 10% of the test takers get it right??? I suspect these easy questions with claims of difficulty are to get increased access to people's facebook accounts because they have "interacted" with you. Opinions?

Why is it so hard to get a text version of the full SMS conversation on an android phone? Do I really need to write a parser that grovels the db database that the messages are stored in? Which rocket scientist had the bright idea of storing what is mostly plain text in some weird database file? Did someone need to get a thesis out of doing a simple task in some round-about obtuse manner?

Today's gripe: twitter won't let one turn on FIDO U2F (usb security key logins) unless one hands over their telephone number. Holding security hostage until people cough up some valuable information they can sell to advertisers is despicable. #securityfail

Chris debunks some movie myths about space travel. He explains things very well. Worth a listen.

That is normally my parking space. The guy took it moments before I got there. Guess he can keep it.

The mating dance of the dinosaurs, brick and mortar version or why I won't be surprised to hear Barnes and Noble is going out of business. Unlike Amazon which buys enough computer resources to cover peak times of year such as Christmas, Barnes and Noble can't seem to get their act together and deliver a Nook format electronic book in 3 days. This is not rocket science. UPS and Fedex are faster at delivering packages from Amazon than B&N's electronic delivery network is for ebooks. Shame on them for under-building their electronic delivery network like that. This is not a good sign for their long term survival.

I was scratching my head over a mysterious hissing or white noise source in the kitchen. It was very faint and sounded like a radio tuned between stations. It came from the fridge area or perhaps the window. First guess was the neighbor's sprinklers. Going out the back door didn't reveal any such noise outside. It probably wasn't the fridge because the compressor or fan wasn't running. Moving away from the fridge I could barely hear it any more. Let's look behind the fridge. Bingo. The freezer's water line to the icemaker had developed a pinhole. It basically aerosolized the water, the hole was that fine. I put that tube in in 1993. It lasted 25 years. I guess 30 psi chlorinated municipal water took its toll. I wonder if it would have happened with copper pipe, but then again that would have had its own problems with stress hardening of the copper every time the fridge got moved.
