Unintended irony (from a Google News link). Google really needs to demote any article links to sites that use Adobe Flash.

Forget about faked moon landings. Now we have folks claiming the SpaceX landings are faked. Best exchange yet:

Brinkman: Is there any reason that most of the landings appear to have been at night so far?

Musk: It's much easier to do the CGI that way

Trump has done more to make encrypted messaging popular than even Snowden did. The article has a really nice writeup of Signal's author, Moxie Marlinspike. Well worth the read.

The Signal motto should be: "I came for the reliable delivery over TCP but stayed for the end-to-end encryption."

Redux: cyber terrorists are still script kiddies at heart contrary to the press reports that overstate the danger in order to sell more papers and/or online views.

New MS-Windows based malware discovered inside ATMs. The full details haven't been released. The malware appears to be injected into memory directly using data and binaries stashed inside the MS-Windows registry.

I was wondering how long it would take SpaceX to find stress cracks in critical parts. Cracks are what made fast turn-around on NASA's space shuttle problematic. Things like the turbo-pumps needed to be removed, stripped down and repaired. Ditto for the engine bells. Instead of landing, mounting it on another booster and flying again there was a 9 month ordeal that often involved stealing good parts from a different orbiter. It just seemed unlikely that the Falcon-9 wouldn't have similar issues. Well, finally we get the confirmation that things are breaking and need fixing. The interesting twist is the Elon Musk seems to think it it possible to design things in a way that the parts won't crack. The thing he excels at is fast redesign and turnaround. He has the engineers and manufacturing people under the same roof. That is the right way to do things and it is sure to help him here.

While the article is about dissent in the ranks at various government agencies, the program pictured is Signal, a readily available free safe communication app for Android, IOS and Google Chrome. The program is more reliable than SMS text messages. Texts don't get dropped silently when the gateways between carriers get overloaded as they do for SMS. Texts and all other communication in Signal also get encrypted end-to-end so not even the carriers or Signal's authors can read the messages. Signal also comes with endorsements from some of the heavy hitters in the crypto and communications security fields. Everybody should take the 5 minutes to download and activate the program. It is time well spent.

I don't think the dogs can complain that I didn't make a full pot of food for them. It should be 14 kg (31 lbs). One whole chicken (2.4 kg), 7 kg potatoes, 1 kg carrots, 1 beet, 1 sweet potato, 1 yam (350 g ea.), 3 kg water.
