Update to post on Internet-enabled gerrymandering
(Scroll to the end of the post).

The Internet enabled partisan gerrymandering and now a panel of federal judges has ordered North Carolina to redraw its gerrymandered congressional map.

The panel struck down North Carolina’s congressional map, saying it was unconstitutional because it violates the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. Judge James A. Wynn Jr., in a biting 191-page opinion, said that Republicans in North Carolina’s Legislature had been “motivated by invidious partisan intent” as they carried out their obligation in 2016 to divide the state into 13 congressional districts, 10 of which are held by Republicans.

The legislature has until January 24 to present a “remedial plan” and the court will institute its own map if it finds the new district lines unsatisfactory. Needless to say, the Democrats reacted positively and the Republican negatively.

The ruling will be appealed directly to the Supreme Court, which is also hearing Wisconsin and Maryland gerrymandering cases. The Wisconsin case is similar to South Carolina's, which is based on the 14th amendment, challenges the state district map and is pro-Democratic while the Maryland case challenges the redrawing of a single district, is based on the 1st Amendment and is pro-Republican.

Update to post on SpaceX Starlink Internet service
(Scroll to the end of the post).

The SpaceX Zuma launch was a success. You can see a video of the launch here, but it ends just after the recovery of the booster because the purpose of the mission is secret. The recovery footage, near the end of the video, shows the controlled descent of the booster -- X marks the spot.

SpaceX has made booster recovery routine. Their next launch will the first for the new Falcon Heavy, which will, if all goes well, put Elon Musk's roadster in orbit. It will also be available for launches of SpaceX Internet-service satellites when they begin next year.

Update to post on OneWeb's satellite Internet service project
(Scroll to the end of the post).

SoftBank is investing in Uber. This fits into the Internet-of-things strategy mentioned above and complements their other investments related to autonomous vehicles. Someday we may see Tesla cars talking to SpaceX satellites and Uber cars talking to OneWeb satellites. Is any organization thinking about autonomous vehicle standards?

Update to post on the SpaceX BFR
(Scroll to the end of the post).

SpaceX has released photos of the first Falcon Heavy rocket. It is expected to launch next month, putting a Tesla Roadster in solar orbit. When asked why he wanted to put the car in orbit, Musk said he loves "the thought of a car drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future," and so do I. That reply is even cooler than Mallory saying he climbed Mount Everest "because it's there."

They hope to retrieve and reuse the three booster rockets.

ETECSA has a new transit provider -- the medium-Earth orbit satellite company O3b. Might a low-Earth orbit satellite company directly serve Cubans one day?

A survey of the efforts of companies planning to offer global broadband connectivity using constellations of low-Earth orbiting satellites

#SpaceX, #Boeing,   #OneWeb, #Telesat and #Leosat are investing in very large projects to deliver global, high-speed #Internet service. This could be a significant option for #Cuba and other developing nations, rural areas of developed nations, long-haul links, Internet of things, and more by the mid-2020s.
