Dell's PC market share rise dates from the go-private transaction: http://tinyurl.com/jl2ama9
Dell's market share in PCs has risen steadily since the company went private 13 quarters ago. There seems to be a correlation between this success and the company's unlisted status.

When is a firearm not like an algorithm? http://tinyurl.com/hnbeajf
I would never argue that everyone should own a gun, but strong encryption for all people is more of a benefit than a liability. Apple and the rest of the tech industry should stand fast on not allowing the government to build a back door into their products.

There's beauty in this animal: http://tinyurl.com/hu6le8l
Although it's big and powerful, the new Dell XPS 15 slides right into a laptop bag because its InfinityEdge display make this 15" notebook no larger than most 14" models. Meanwhile, the 4K resolution is so high that text has to be cranked to 250% in order to be readable.

Postmortem on CES: http://tinyurl.com/hj2uzwf
Armies of reporters did an amazing job capturing the CES show in all its glory. Instead, here are a few highlights that struck me, my moments of epiphany.

Intel has come full spiral:
Eons ago, Intel used to be in the memory business. It left due to competition from Japanese rivals. Today, it is back in the memory business with flash and has dedicated a plant in China to making it. This return to memories comes at a time when the company's server business is booming while its endpoint business is languishing. Memories may help fill its factories, but likely it will still have excess capacity, which it may devote to foundry act...

Another view of the double-edged sword of technology: http://tinyurl.com/hgvysuz

To separate blockchain from BitCoin, use less expensive blocks: http://tinyurl.com/znn6r48
An awareness is dawning in the industry that blockchain—the technology behind (really, interwoven with) BitCoin—is the main story. BitCoin is almost a distraction, a sideshow to the real deal. Most people have heard of BitCoin, the “cryptocurrency.” In simple terms, BitCoin is value that resides in computer networks. It seems to be mysteriously reliable, partly because it is verified by multiple parties. Some people know about “blockchain,” part ...

Hewlett-Packard and Compaq: better together. HPE and HPQ: better apart. Or so they say. And the transaction occurred, generating vast fees for Wall Street.

Openness works for IBM in China.  Why not other for other U.S. companies: http://tinyurl.com/odk9xnx
Although some have wondered about IBM's willingness to share source code with Chinese entities, its doing so makes sense. The company has embraced an open regime and has deep ties with Chinese partners and customers, particularly in the area of CPU technology through the OpenPOWER foundation. In being open about software, the company seeks, through reasonable means, to reassure customers that its code doesn't allow their data to fall into the w...
