Spruce up the Mudroom
Acute Houzz Envy: a forlorn state suffered by those who look at perfectly styled photos of gorgeous homes for hours on end and think, “My house will never look like that!” Trust me, when I lose perspective I get it too, but then I remember that these thousands of photos are here so that I can steal great ideas from them. Also I remember that those houses looked like that on photo shoot day after being professionally styled, lit and shot. Those ho...

Hi all – did you guys have a nice holiday weekend? We sure did. My parents flew in to visit and before heading our way my mom called to throw out the suggestion that we make reservations somewhere special for Easter brunch instead of me doing the cooking. Um…ok, twist my arm. Within two minutes of getting off the phone we had reservations at one of our favorite spots – the Inn at Pound Ridge. You all would love this place – it’s a beautiful mix o...

Having renovated and added on to their semidetached Victorian house in London, Johnny and Gillian Martin teamed up with Jamie Blake of Blakes London and set about designing their kitchen. The couple had two key considerations. The first was that they wanted a big, freestanding oven range that would help them cook for sociable evenings with friends. The second was the sofa. The couple loved their handsome blue sofa, but it was big. Really big. “It...

It’s the first spot you reach for when you get home, and the place for last-second grabs on your way out the door — there’s no doubt the hall closet is a workhorse. But how well is yours working for you? Whether you could use more room or better organization, these ideas should help. Hardworking space: The hall closet. The challenge: The hall closet is a useful feature, but not all homes have one — and even if yours does, it might not be as spac...

New homes are getting bigger. The size of the average American home built in 2013 was 2,600 square feet, which is bigger than ever, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While it can be nice to have such a spacious dwelling, many of us live in much older homes, built early in the previous century, with smaller floor plans that reflect the routines of a different era. Many people are continuing to flock to urban environments, too, where living spac...

I love the look of polished concrete floors in kitchens, but concrete — along with other nonresilient floor surfaces, such as stone, ceramic and porcelain tile — can take a toll on your joints. I've heard complaints from many homeowners who regret putting in a hard flooring material in their kitchen because of the subsequent knee, hip or back pain they feel after standing or walking on it for a long period. Fortunately there are plenty of softer,...

Bathroom renovations have been our #1 request over the past 3 months
Ever looked at a beautiful bathroom and wondered what takes its design to the next level? You’re not alone. Many homeowners want to know how some bathrooms get that mysterious designer je ne sais quoi. I’ll let you in on a few secrets. Because the overall material costs are low in a small space like a bathroom, it’s a great place to spurge a little on a few features. But it also helps to know where to spend and where to save. Here are a few of my...
