For one client's shop, I need to allow users registering with .gov emails to register immediately, without verification. Is this a common practice in the US? How should I implement this in Drupal 7?

+Chris Burgess Yay thanks for your reminder Chris. I ended up doing something in between what you and +Andreas Knoll  suggested: I have set initially all accounts to go published with email verification but without admin's moderation, then I created a rule, that all accounts except gov and mil are blocked on creation, and a standard Drupal account moderation email to all non-gov and non-mil account is sent. And the client is emailed a request at account  moderation.

All the recent talk of PHP 7 has driven me to have a look at HHVM. And no, there is logic to it, though not direct maybe.
PHP 7 will be released soon, and Drupal comminuty is beginning to consider reworking Drupal's code in anticipation. It seems like much needs to be changed in Drupal code base, though. So, it is unlikely that PHP 7 support will be in Drupal 8. PHP 7 promises significant boost in performance for OOP elements, which are desperately needed for Drupal 8. There has been a competition in performance between PHP and it's hack, called... well... Hack.

Desktop VS Laptop for Drupal dev work. Or both? I can use my laptop in most cases and also its good for travel. Desktop is faster though, and can index solr or migrate stuff much faster, and has a larger screen. However, moving data between the two is a pain and a waste of time. Have you been torn in between the two options? What are your thoughts on that? What works for you?

Most Chromebooks do. Mine has an SD card (up to 128GB) 2 USB ports (2.0 + 3.0).

And yes, Scott. Crouton is chroot for ChromeOS which lets you specify where your additional linux env/system should live (sdcard, /usr/bin/xxx/, etc)

Who knows the answer to these two questions:
1. Are there still plans and honest expectations to increase D8 performance to be on par with D7? (My ab testing shows D8 to be about 5 times less performant).
2. Every time D8 updates, it breaks badly and I end up reinstalling it. Will this be fixed?

I do certainly hope so.

There seems to be a mess in Drupal 8 documentation about how to replace the #attached  javascript for the forms. Seems like Drupal 8 was going into it strongly and there are a bunch of sites that say it's if not the only way to add js now, while later this approach was condemned as flawed, so now defining your javascript file as a library seems to be dominating the docs and #attached raises an error. I feel like defining each js snippet as a library is a gross overkill. Am I missing something?

As a "user" of Drupal, I'm all for the less is more approach. I've had to remove some cool JS modules from my sites because they inject JS on every single page, though it only needs to be added to one or two.

For me, the end game is performance over functionality. If D8 will give me the best of both worlds, I'm all for a little more back end work to reduce the overhead on the frontend.

Это не украинские войска провели этот "парад", а боевики из ДНР. Украинцы еще не настолько опустились, чтобы пленных по улицам гонять.

Have been handed a D7 project, where REST services based on Drupal are built in a separate folder with SLIM and bootstrapping Drupal 7, rather than the Services module. The previous developer is gone, and I can't ask him why he made that choice. Any suggestions? Is SLIM better in some ways?

After Drupal gets bootstrapped what does slim do with Drupal? I wonder if even when Drupal is bootstrapped, that slims routing is more performant, so the services are more performant also. Slim is known for being minimalist, that could equate to less computational weight and better performance, but I am not sure ... benchmark it if you have the time +Alexei Rayu :)

Recently I conducted some research on Drupal integration with Zopim, to integrate this functionality with arocom.de. Zopim is an online chat with an admin service-side backend. Here are some strong and weak sides to Zopim, some pros and cons to using Zopim as your customer support chat.
